Burn It Down

Back in Louisiana, Chado Cole, his dog Buck. and Uriel, sit on top of the Belle River levee at the Highway 70 crossing. They watch the Fire Marshal along with several detectives as they sift through what used to be known as the Bayou Rose. This once thriving bar and drug lab is now no more than a smoldering pile of splintered lumber.

The modern day vigilantes responsible for this destruction are undetected and safely hidden just a few miles away.

Several ambulances back into position as the EMTs along with the coroner move in with stretchers and body bags. One after the other, they roll body after body to their vehicles.

The local news team arrives and starts following the EMTs in an attempt to get a shot of the scorched bodies. They eventually work their way around until they get close enough to ask the Parish Sheriff for a report. “Sheriff Bradford, Sheriff Bradford, do you mind answering a few questions, sir?”

“No, I cannot answer any questions. However, I will give you a very short statement. As of right now, you know about as much as we do. We’re waiting on the Fire Marshall to give us his findings on what caused the explosions.”

The news journalist butts in. “You said explosions, was it one or two?”

The Sheriff, staring across the crime scene, says, “Our 911 dispatch reported that several locals called in and stated it was two very loud explosions. So, I guess we can safely say there were at least two.”

“How many were killed, Sheriff?”

“We don’t know at this time.”

“Was there foul play?”

“Ma’am, I told you I wouldn’t answer any questions about this case. We need our facts.”

“Yes sir, we understand.”

“I tell you what, since me and your daddy used to go frog hunting together back when we were kids, I’ll give you what us Cajuns call lagniappe—just a little extra. The Coroner just told me that he believes some of those men died from gunshots. From their charred bodies it is hard to tell here in the field. At this point we believe there could be foul play.”

“Sheriff, could you tell if there were any women that may have died in the explosion? I knew a few of the girls working here.

“No, Ma’am, we don’t think so. That’s all I can tell you this morning. We’ll give an update later this afternoon. You folks need to get back and let our detectives do their work. Tell your folks Sheriff Bradford sends his love.”

“Thank you, Sheriff.”
