Chapter 22
David browsed the paperback section of the bookstore until one. There were no options he felt would suitably fill any downtime he might have. They were all the same romance novels his aunt used to read. Books of lustful affairs but little substance. Essentially, the same content as the mindless sludge from the dating shows on TV.
There had been a few magazines he flipped through, but again, nothing he felt would do him much good in trying to kill time. He knew, though, that his time in Havana was growing shorter and he doubted there would be much downtime at all. Not if he hoped to figure out where Caroline and Braden had gone. At the very least, figure out why they felt the need to disappear.
As David left the bookstore, he slid his hand into his right pocket and felt the card Mr. Roads had given him. He would call him that night and go to the golf outing. Someone there might know something, and while he would not ask them outright, he figured he could gauge whether they had seen his clients recently. He would wade those waters carefully and strategically. He also thought, if he were there, he may be able to point out the man who had broken into the house after him. The breathing and heavy footfalls would be a dead giveaway.
David stood outside of the diner for only a minute before Bella emerged. She had changed into a pair of shorts that rode high on her tan legs and a deep purple tank top.
âLucky for me I didnât do laundry yet. I have a spare set of clothes.â
âThat is lucky,â David agreed. âNo cart today. Do you want to take your car?â
âActually, my roommate dropped me off. I just called to let her know I will call her when I am done.â Bella followed David as he began walking back towards his rental.
âThat is a nice roommate. I only had roommates in college, but I know none of them would have been so gracious with their transporting services.â
Bella chuckled, âJanice works from home. Driving me to and from work is the most she gets out so she looks forward to it.â
âYeah, I did telehealth for a while during the pandemic. It was nice, but I like being part of the world. Not just another face on the screen.â
âI donât think I could work from home. I like people too much.â
âI get that,â David told her. As they walked her hand brushed against his, then again. A moment later, their fingers were tied together.
âI love hearing peopleâs stories and feeling like I am a part of their lives.â
âYou are part of their lives. For some people, you may be the only part of their day they have to look forward to.â
âMost of the people I see are rich beyond measure. I am certain I am not the highlight of their day. The rich are not that lonely.â
âDefinitely the rich,â David told her.
She looked at him quizzically, gauging whether he was serious.
