Chapter Twelve

Caitlyn went back to the downtown police station with the intent of clearing her head of what had just happened. It was one thing to give bad news to strangers’ families; it was altogether different when she had to tell a friend her husband of less than a year had died tragically in a distant land. It didn’t help when the moment ended with them swapping barbs.

She had Skye brought to her desk. The girl looked a little frazzled after spending a couple of hours in a cell, but in one piece. She gave the girl the takeout tray of teriyaki and rice she’d brought.

“Would you expect him to be home tonight?” she asked the young woman.

“He should be. He peddles that stuff during the daytime.”

“Do you know where he gets it?”

“Some dude at the beach, and then he sorts it at home before peddling it at a couple of parks.”

“Which parks?”

“A’ala.” Skye took another bite of meat. “Funny name for a park. I think it’s sort of near downtown.”

“I know it. Any part of the park?”

“The kids at the skate place are his best customers. They usually buy him out.”

“Not tonight, they won’t be. What’s his name?”

“Kevin Kando, but he pronounces it like the building ‘condo’. The kids just call him Kev.”

More bad news on the crappiest day ever. Kevin was a cousin of Caitlyn, a kid that had been in and out of juvey several times, to the point that he’d probably spent more time there than in high school classrooms. It also meant she wouldn’t be able to participate directly in a sting operation since he’d recognize her. If she had more time, she’d set up a stakeout and follow him around to see where he got the stuff. She figured it was from the usual place at a beach known as the ‘lagoon’ near the airport. Because of the noise from landing and departing airliners, most people stayed away except shore fishermen that liked to be left alone. That sort of operation would require at least half a dozen officers, maybe even a dozen, and weeks of intelligence gathering and planning. She didn’t have that much time. If she could get one pusher out of a park where kids hung out, even for just a few nights, it would be a victory. If it was her cousin, that would be even better.

Caitlyn got the address of Kev’s latest apartment and had Skye taken back to her cell.

She called Davinagracia Bautista the young officer that Caitlyn had been teaching street smarts to.

“Davina, are you busy this evening?”

“Watching the tube.”

“You need to get a boyfriend.”

“I just got rid of one. Not in a hurry to get another. What’s up?”

“Want to be the primary in a sting?”

“Sorta tired of pretending I’m a Chinatown hooker.”

“It’s not exactly that. It would be a drug bust at A’ala Park this evening. Can you still look like a teenager?”

“I still have some of my old clothes from back then. It wasn’t all that long ago.
