Chapter Twelve
Caitlyn went back to the downtown police station with the intent of clearing her head of what had just happened. It was one thing to give bad news to strangersâ families; it was altogether different when she had to tell a friend her husband of less than a year had died tragically in a distant land. It didnât help when the moment ended with them swapping barbs.
She had Skye brought to her desk. The girl looked a little frazzled after spending a couple of hours in a cell, but in one piece. She gave the girl the takeout tray of teriyaki and rice sheâd brought.
âWould you expect him to be home tonight?â she asked the young woman.
âHe should be. He peddles that stuff during the daytime.â
âDo you know where he gets it?â
âSome dude at the beach, and then he sorts it at home before peddling it at a couple of parks.â
âWhich parks?â
âAâala.â Skye took another bite of meat. âFunny name for a park. I think itâs sort of near downtown.â
âI know it. Any part of the park?â
âThe kids at the skate place are his best customers. They usually buy him out.â
âNot tonight, they wonât be. Whatâs his name?â
âKevin Kando, but he pronounces it like the building âcondoâ. The kids just call him Kev.â
More bad news on the crappiest day ever. Kevin was a cousin of Caitlyn, a kid that had been in and out of juvey several times, to the point that heâd probably spent more time there than in high school classrooms. It also meant she wouldnât be able to participate directly in a sting operation since heâd recognize her. If she had more time, sheâd set up a stakeout and follow him around to see where he got the stuff. She figured it was from the usual place at a beach known as the âlagoonâ near the airport. Because of the noise from landing and departing airliners, most people stayed away except shore fishermen that liked to be left alone. That sort of operation would require at least half a dozen officers, maybe even a dozen, and weeks of intelligence gathering and planning. She didnât have that much time. If she could get one pusher out of a park where kids hung out, even for just a few nights, it would be a victory. If it was her cousin, that would be even better.
Caitlyn got the address of Kevâs latest apartment and had Skye taken back to her cell.
She called Davinagracia Bautista the young officer that Caitlyn had been teaching street smarts to.
âDavina, are you busy this evening?â
âWatching the tube.â
âYou need to get a boyfriend.â
âI just got rid of one. Not in a hurry to get another. Whatâs up?â
âWant to be the primary in a sting?â
âSorta tired of pretending Iâm a Chinatown hooker.â
âItâs not exactly that. It would be a drug bust at Aâala Park this evening. Can you still look like a teenager?â
âI still have some of my old clothes from back then. It wasnât all that long ago.
