CHAPTER 19
Unfortunately, I wasnât able to discuss my theories about Dorothy with my sister just yet as it was Sunday night and thus time for the Clearwater family dinner. I drove up the mountainside towards the lake, the fog was winding itâs way through the row upon row of pine trees and I wondered idly if there was ever a truly hot, sunny day in this town. I guess thatâs why itâs called Shady Pines.
I arrived at the intimidating gothic manor and pulled my car up to the door. Walter, the portly butler of the family came out and I handed him my car keys.
âUm, thanks, Walter,â I said awkwardly. It felt weird, I wondered if maybe I should tip him or something.
âYou are most welcome Madam Quinn,â he said in a distinctly refined British accent. He sounded so fancy I thought for a moment I should bow or something. I thought better of it and headed into the house. This time the foyer was empty though I could hear voices in the dining hall upstairs. I made my way up the carved stone staircase, noticing that the framed paintings on the stairwell seemed to all be of Leticia when she was younger, painted with various men I did not recognize.
As I reached the top of the stairs the voices got louder, frustrated sounding.
âYou should respect me more!â I heard a voice that sounded like my Uncle say. Then, my sister
âItâs not a matter of respect,â she said sharply âitâs about saving lives.â
âThere will be no arguing at my table,â an older voice bellowed. I figured that had to be my Grandmother, especially based on the fact that a hush followed her words. I walked into the dining hall and saw most of my family seated around the long table.
âAh, finally,â Leticia said, looking down her sharp nose at me âbetter late than never I suppose!â
âSorry, Grandmother,â I said and scuttled up to the table to an empty spot between Miriam and Sophie. I waved awkwardly at the rest of the people at the table. My cousin Anton with the long hair nodded his head at me, younger cousin Dominic was absorbed in a game on his phone again, the rude exchange student Preston was next to him and did not acknowledge my presence.
âGood evening, Quinn, welcome.â Luther said politely, although his tone was ice cold.
âSorry Iâm late,â I said, suddenly remembering Lutherâs warning to not be late earlier in the day. âI got a little lost on the way up here,â I added.
âNext time come with Miriam so you donât make that mistake again,â Leticia said crisply.
âOh, Iâm sure I can figure it out,â I said.
âMiriam will drive you,â Leticia said with a firmness that made me realize it wasnât up for debate.
âItâs no problem,â Miriam said, keeping her tone light. I guess after the newspaper exposé she wasnât taking any chances with her family.
âWhereâs Stacey?â I asked, noticing her chipper face wasnât at the table.
Leticia pursed her wrinkly lips in a way that sort of made them look like a prune.
