An alarm had gone off somewhere, and nobody was attending to it. The shrill sound woke me up from a deep slumber. My head felt heavy, and I feared opening my eyes. So, I kept lying there quietly, matching my breaths to the beeping of the machines that surrounded the bed, the only indications of my heartbeat, my existence. After a while, however, curiosity got the better of me, and I slowly pried open my eyes to meet a dismal view of a hospital room, as devoid of beauty, as I was of hope. Sliding my eyes sideways, I saw they'd handcuffed my wrists to the bed bars. Beyond that was my chart -

Patient : Biswambhar Mishra

So the police had successfully convicted me of the false charges and were now trying to prove insanity. I was trapped, and my poor family was doomed forever. Tears welled up in my eyes as I thought about the plight of my dearest family.

I tried to get up with much difficulty. The handcuffs were hurting. A yellow file was lying half-open on the side table. I pulled it out to read.

"Patient name: Biswambhar Mishra

Age: 48

Case History:

Biswambhar Mishra, a civil engineer, worked at a Government department in Bhubaneshwar till 2017. His wife Sumitra Mishra (40 y.o) died in the year 2015. Cause of death – Suicide. Soon after the incident, the patient started showing symptoms of depression, anxiety attack, and occasional memory loss. Citing medical reasons, the patient took voluntary retirement from work and shifted to his current residence in Kolkata. He had been advised by his doctor to continue to take his antidepressants.

His flat was right across the home of Mr. Arindam Bose (40 y.o.) who lived with his wife Siya Bose (35 y.o), son Soham Bose(5 y.o.) and daughter Riya Bose (11 y.o.). He was invited by the family to attend their son Soham's birthday on 15th September 2018.

On the date of crime, 16th September 2018, Mishra called Arindam Bose to his flat and poisoned his drink. Later, he tricked Mrs. Siya Bose to visit his flat, gagged her, and kept her captive in his bedroom. The kids were also brought in after some time. As per the postmortem report, the three were kept captive for several days, before they were strangled and murdered. The dead bodies were hidden behind the walls in various rooms. There was no sign of physical torture or sexual abuse, besides the strangulation.

Psychosis Analysis: It is assumed that the patient observed the Bose family for a year and was obsessed with their happy family life. In his unstable condition, he wanted to replace Mr. Arindam Bose. So he murdered Mr. Bose and kidnapped his family. He kept them captive and started believing that he was Mr. Arindam Bose. When the family tried to escape, he strangled them and started living with their corpses and later skeletons.

In the past year, the evidence showed that he lived as a recluse in his house, with bare minimum contact with the outer world.
