Chapter 28
They had been driving for several hours. Robert wondered if Marty had a destination in mind or if he was just trying to get as far away from Minocqua as possible.
If only I had my phone, Iâd be able to see if the cops have been to my house. The outdoor cameras, which I doubt they noticed, could keep me abreast of everything that goes on outside, and since I have a post office box instead of mail coming to the house, the cops wonât have any idea if Iâm home during the week or not.
Robert chuckled at how the TV show he had stumbled across last year had given him great ideas about how to keep people from learning too much about his life. That included the cops, his neighbors, and anyone else who was a bit too nosy. If he ever went back to the cabin or sold it and bought another, he would implement those same ideas there. Having no mailbox, no house number attached to the cabin, and no post office box in town could keep others from finding out exactly who he was. Anonymity was his friend, and that was the way he liked it.
They had already passed Antigo, Wisconsin, and were still heading south. Driving the back roads was time-consuming but far safer, and that was what counted. After all, Robert wasnât in a hurry to get anywhere, and he doubted that Marty and Diana were either.
I bet theyâre going to look for a different vehicle after dark too. Driving in a stolen truck belonging to someone they think is a missing Minocqua man isnât the smartest way to get around, especially when the cops are probably looking for that dead guy and his truck.
That thought reminded Robert to watch the news whenever Marty decided to call it a night and find a motel off the beaten path. Robert wanted to see if there was any local coverage about the police murders and if any progress was being made by the police department.
His stomach rumbled, and he reached across the seat for a bag of chips. He had no idea whether the couple in front of him had a well-stocked vehicleâthanks to the large supply of food he kept in the cabinâbut sooner or later, one of them would have to use the bathroom, and Diana didnât strike him as the type of woman who would drop her pants along the side of the road.
If only I knew what they did with my phone. Did they put it someplace within reach like the console, or is it stashed in one of their duffel bags? Thereâs only one way to find out, and I intend to do that once they make a pit stop at a gas station.
Sneaking up on the truck was risky, but Robert hadnât made it that far in life by being a chickenshit. The reward was always worth the risk, and he would find out how true that might be the next time they stopped.
