He could hear Billy arguing with his wife, Margaret. No, not arguing. Billy never actually argued; he just wore you down. Of course, he had learned this technique from Margaret herself, who was also skilled in the relentless back and forth. Ryan signalled to Billy, who wrapped up his conversation and grimaced. “Her mum and dad are coming over again. I’m not sure I’m up for it. When the three of them get together, it would do your head in.” Billy paused, looked a bit lost.

“Tell you what, why don’t we head over and see what Sweet’s up to? Phil Massey said he’d be back in the afternoon. We can pop into that club of theirs, see if he’ll talk to us, and if not, we can make sure he knows we want him to come in tomorrow for an official interview. I don’t trust Phil Massey to deliver the message. And I’d like to rattle him a bit. That should get you home a bit late, right?”

“Great, yes, let’s do that. I’ll just let Margaret know.” Billy grinned. “Maybe grab a bit of dinner?”
