I had no intention of going out there.

Even I knew I would only be a burden. I wasn’t a terrible fighter, but against a Vrykolakas? No way.

I paced the length of the room, glancing out the window, hoping for some kind of sign of Kent. He had only left ten minutes ago, but the minutes felt like hours, and even though there was a wood floor, I was positive I would burn a hole through it.

I cracked each knuckle on one hand and then did the same to the other hand before tugging at the skin around my fingernails. At least I wasn’t biting the nails; my mother had at least rid me of that bad habit before she left.

I tried not to think about what Kent might be doing, how he might be faring against a beast like the Vrykolakas. He hadn’t told me much about his encounter, and I found myself picturing all of these gruesome things that I wasn't sure were exaggeration or underwhelm.

By the time I started chewing my bottom lip, I knew I needed some sort of distraction or else I was going to drive myself crazy.

I pulled the sheets to the bed, straightening it. I fluffed a pillow, took a step back so I could look at the bed as a whole, before tilting the other pillow to the side. Tugging the inside of my cheek with my teeth, I continued to move, swiping dust off the frame of the window while pointedly not looking out the glass.

I hated cleaning. This room didn’t even need that much, and yet, I couldn’t stop doing things. And even then, that didn’t mean I was able to actually keep what was going on from my mind.

A gentle knock on my door caught my attention. For a moment, I straightened, staring at the door, counting the seconds as my breath remained stuck still in my body.

When it happened again, I released the breath, knowing I would have to answer it before someone barged in. Maybe there was a chance I would have the distraction I needed. Maybe there was news. If it was Kent, he would have come through the room. Whoever this was…

I made my way to the door and carefully opened the door, cocking my head to the side. There stood Lily, wringing the skirt of her dress with her fingers, and biting her bottom lip much the same way I was.

“I take it Kent left with the others?” she asked. There was a tremor of worry in her tone she didn’t bother to hide. I didn’t know her well, but this seemed out of character for her.

A small, petty part of me didn’t want to answer. What business of it was hers where Kent was? And the truth was, she already knew, just as everybody else here did. To deny that would be to deny who Kent was, what kind of person he was.

“Did you need something?” I asked instead, quirking a brow, all while trying to remain as polite as I could.
