7.2 GAUTHIER

Gauthier had known for several days that the girl had survived the avalanche, ever since the northmen began arriving at the riverbank, demanding boats. He’d scouted the area south of the river where they’d put her, and knew that there was no way in. Not unless you were Duke Ragener. He stood on the dyke with Roche, watching the duke leave with his entourage.

‘The northmen say she caused that avalanche,’ Roche muttered. Gauthier’s employer wore a plain cote-hardie and a sword, but no retainer’s badge; he was an anonymous face amidst an army. Gauthier had reclaimed his priest’s robe; priests could go anywhere, except that girl’s camp within a camp.

‘There were sounds just before it came, like someone was hitting the mountain with a hammer. I have no idea what that was.’

Roche snorted. ‘I’m beginning to think you’re unlucky.’

Gauthier didn’t take the remark seriously. Men like them didn’t believe in superstitious nonsense. They were practical men. An avalanche had wiped out the pursuit. End of that plan. What next?

‘Our friends all died?’

‘As far as I know, apart from the man who pulled me out. And if any of the advance party had lived, the girl wouldn’t be carrying a tarrazim bow.’

‘Do you know where the rest of the tarrazim are, the ones that didn’t ride north?’

‘I came back with the one who lived. We crossed the river a day’s ride east. They’re all there, waiting to know if you have any orders. I sense they would like to finish the job.’

As would Gauthier.

Roche turned towards that protected inner area. It was now a square of green open space surrounded by two thousand men. More were arriving with every boat.

‘They’d never get to her, Roche. That ring of berserkers is tighter than a duck’s arse. This is going to take stealth.’ Gauthier wanted this job. It was personal now. No target had ever slipped away from him like this. His professional pride said she had to die.

‘I can see that, you fool.’ Roche paused, thinking. ‘Go and find the rest. Tell them we will hire them all. Give them a chance for revenge. Then take them to the Forest of Liense on the Theignault borders. There is an abandoned tower overlooking the River Gedha, and I will meet them there with gold.’

Gauthier sighed. Roche was wasting his lord’s money. ‘And then?’ He wanted a slice of it.

‘Join me at Gedhabrú, where the army musters. Come as a priest. A priest can go where thirty tarrazim cannot. We’ll watch for our chance. There will be battles, and in battles people die.’

‘Just get me close, Roche. I’ll do the rest.’ With relish.
