Pent stood at the edge of Seward, his back towards the hills that protected the village on the beach. He had his pack filled with dried fish, his sword in his scabbard, cleaned and sharpened, and his friend flanking him, standing upright as if he had never caught fever at all.

“So then, you’ve had your fill of Seward?” Darson said. He had a vacant look on his face. “We have so few visitors, it’s a shame to lose some who appear good of heart.”

“It is as we told you,” Hanar said. “We must return to our journey, to find the missing children of our village. Perhaps after we have them in hand, we can break bread again.”

“Of course,” Darson said. “Seward did not have any children to lose. I hope you find answers in your journey.”

Pent nodded. He sized up Darson, his eyes lingering on the man’s graying hair. “You’re wasted out here.” The chief looked at him in confusion. “I don’t mean any disrespect. If you want to live out in the middle of nowhere, hey, that’s your call. But you could do much better, help a lot more people, if you came back home with us.”

Darson coughed into his hand. “We’re safe as is, and Verra has a world of sand to turn into her glass creations here. Isn’t that enough?”

Pent shrugged. “Like I said, your call. I just know someone back home who would love to meet you…” Pent trailed off, watching the large man with the blond, wavy hair named Clarence approach them. Clarence, I still can’t get over that. He glared at Pent for a moment.

“I’m willing to escort you past the hills, but no farther. I won’t stray far from home.” His tone suggested any bartering would be futile.

“Sure. That’s good enough for us,” Pent said. “I figure we’ll head back up to Gilbrand Castle, then head west from there.”

Hanar nodded, referencing Faldo’s map. “All we have to go by is ‘west.’ I mean to find some clue of the children’s path along the way.” His nose was buried in the crumpled piece of paper. “It won’t be easy. We still don’t have much else to go by.”

“There are a few villages to the west,” Darson said. “People tend to settle by water, so you’ll find more who live along the western coasts, but there is one village of decent size inland. Their chief is a decent man, and he rules with a pleasant demeanor alongside his two children. But it’s been some time since I’ve spoken with him. Raham was his name. His children should be adults grown by now.” The old doctor seemed to drift off into thought as he continued speaking: “It is hard to account for all these villages. There are scarcely two dozen who live here, while Vinalhaven has thousands. It’s hard to imagine so many people in one place.”

Pent stifled a laugh. Man, if you only knew.

Hanar frowned. “Only two dozen, and less now that you’ve lost your man Hubard.
