He saw no reason to keep a watch, but he lay awake in the bed for too long, all the same, Arianna dreaming peacefully in his arms. Every noise in the castle brought back memories he did not wish to relive. Every soft scuffle of Isabel’s footsteps, every click of Rodric’s boots, even the sounds of livestock and villagers drifting in through the windows reminded him of his days inside the mirror, when he had told time by the king’s arrival, demanding answers, and whipping him when he refused to speak.

But Gunnar was dead, and the threat they faced was far greater, now. Arianna wanted him to promise her they would survive, but how could he? He’d never known Sinmarra, could not even be sure what powers she possessed, but for those she had used to twist the elves into orcs—and that much was more story than truth by now, passed down through the generations.

Bolthorn knew that Sinmarra had gone to great lengths to destroy their capacity for love, but he did not know if it was only for convenience—that one of her soldiers might not hesitate when ordered to kill their loved one—or because there was power there that she could not control. He knew she had not been wholly successful, or at the least, that Vanadis’s power had overcome, when she had gone to her husband, Asfarth, after Ingvifreyr had freed the first orcs. But he was not certain if it was love or some other trick that Vanadis had used. And what that meant for their coming fight against Sinmarra, he could not even begin to guess.

If he knew at least what it was Sinmarra hoped to accomplish, perhaps he would have some peace of mind. What purpose did it serve to enslave Isabel and Sigmund to her will? Or to let Ragnar wage his war, when she could easily bring him to heel? If it was only their blood she was after, to glut upon and increase her own, what magic did she hope to work with so much power?

When he finally slept, it was fitful, and the arrival of the maids bringing Isabel’s lunch woke him from dark dreams of the damp cell that had been his mirrored prison. Even through the stone and thick wood, he could hear Isabel’s voice, murmuring a thank you and shooing the maids out again.

Arianna had rolled to her side, as she often did no matter how determinedly she curled against his chest to start, and he slipped from the bed, then the room itself, careful not to disturb her. She slept so deeply, he did not think she would wake for anything less than a dragon’s roar. And he was glad of it. With all the magic she’d used, all the blood she’d let, and his own still-sore and healing shoulder, the more sleep she had, the better.

“Oh!” Isabel startled at the sight of him, and he smiled, for the way she said the word he knew where Arianna had learned it.
