XIX: DANTE

By the time Piper had dragged him back to the apartment, Dante had sorted through the mess the blood made of his head. He’d gone out to hunt so he could have his magic back. And he needed his magic. Tonight more than ever. He repeated this to himself until it became the only truth he was sure of, as the fog took its time clearing from the rest of his memories.

They reached the apartment, and Piper threw herself on the couch. Dante took his time closing the door, repeating his mantra to himself as Piper became a blur.

“I should go to bed,” she said. “But I’ve been asleep the past however many days, and I really don’t feel tired at all. But I do feel hungry. Really hungry. Do you have anything to eat?”

Dante pointed to the fridge and she rushed for it, yanking the door open and digging through everything with abandon. Dante made his way to his armchair and eased himself into it, resting his head on his hands and his elbows on the inside of his thighs as he sat cross legged. He didn’t move until Pip found something that suited her and pulled it out of the fridge.

“What’d you find?”

“Ground beef,” she said, pulling a pan out from under the stove.

Dante snorted. “I have no idea how old that is, but it’s likely gone bad.”

“I don’t care, at this point,” she said. She turned the burner on and immediately dumped all of the beef into the pan. She apparently planned to eat it with a spoon. Dante cringed as the smell hit his nose and he turned away in disgust. Pip didn’t care.

“We never have this at the house,” Pip said as she found a fork and stabbed at the block of meat. “I mean, we buy everything else for me and Gwen, but never meat.”

Dante cringed. “I can’t imagine why.”

Pip didn’t appear to notice or care about the disdain in his voice, and jabbed away at the heap of meat, filling the apartment with the putrid smell. This got Dante on his feet, ready to head to the window for fresh air. Another scent caught his attention and wrinkled his nose even more. Phineas. He must have come home while they were out. He could smell the vampire in his bedroom, and this was almost enough to make Dante want to leave.

Until his mantra came back to him, and he realized he needed to leave. Before Hades found him.

The thought of Hades brought his heart rate to a rapid gallop. He’d completely forgotten about the reaper. In fact, he’d completely forgotten just about everything after the bite. He didn’t have time to think about the fact that he’d just bitten two people. Only that Hades had promised to come find him after he’d done it.

He had to leave, and it had to be now. Hades would come for him soon, if he wasn’t coming already. And Dante was powerful enough, now, he knew that.
