Chapter 21: New Year’s Eve

Valeriah and Rolf presented the file they’d found at the breakfast table. Kamara was unusually quiet, sullen and distant. But Drake went over the new material eagerly.

“This certainly looks like a map of the Fire Range to me. But how Zobran accomplished anything like a modern geological survey of the area beats me.” Drake flipped to the blueprints for the fourth time and shook his head. “We’re going to need an expert to help us interpret these.”

“That’s why I brought this.” Rolf tapped the employee list. “With any luck, the one who put that file together is on this list. Who better to ask?”

Drake nodded. “Good thinking.” He flipped through the file one more time. “Most of the memos and reports seem to come from the same man. A Dr. Mark McCrae.” He sighed and sat back. “We obviously can’t do anything more about it today. It’s Christmas. Nothing’s open. I’m not sure just what Towers Technology’s holiday schedule is, but as soon as they’re open again, I’ll put in a call for this Dr. McCrae. This definitely gives us a better idea of what questions to ask.”

Reading the atmosphere around the table, Valeriah asked, “So, what happened here last night?”

“Nothing much,” Kamara answered. “Apparently, I’m being held prisoner here.”

Drake sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “You’re not being held prisoner. The spell was removed first thing this morning. You’re merely being prevented from getting yourself into a situation for which you are not—yet—prepared.”

“I’ll take you out shopping again tomorrow,” Valeriah said.

Kamara put her glass down so hard the silverware on the table rattled. “I don’t want to go shopping again. I want to go out with Daniel. I want to meet his friends and start making some friends of my own.”

“All right. I’ll take you down to the DMV to get your non-driver’s ID and then over to El Camino to get you admitted for the Spring semester. How’s that?”

Kamara shot a look at Drake, who was studying the blueprints again. “Well, that’d be a step in the right direction.”

“Of course, we might have to wait until after the first to go to El Camino. I think it’s probably closed this week. But it might actually be a good time to go to the DMV. Less crowded. Everyone will be at the malls.”

“It’ll allow time for her photo ID to arrive, anyway,” Drake said. “The DMV is not noted for its quick turn around.”

Kamara stomped to the front door, still outraged by their visit to the DMV. The amusement on Valeriah’s face only added fuel to her temper.

“I can’t believe it took us three hours to get this little slip of paper.” Kamara waved her temporary ID.

“That’s the DMV. It would have been worse if we hadn’t had an appointment.” Valeriah looked like she was just managing to keep from laughing. “Actually, I think the visit to the DMV was good for you. Gives you something to consider when you come to power. Make sure your government doesn’t treat people that way.
