She wasnât alone.
I repeat that to myself, over and over again, as I walk down to my bike. My sister was not alone the night she died.
Jack is a fucking liar, and Iâm going to make him pay dearly for withholding.
âWhere are we going?â Elijah asks.
âTo get more answers,â I snap.
âThatâs descriptive.â
I halt and spin, jabbing my finger into his hard chest. âIâm teetering on the edge of murderous at the moment, so unless you want me to decapitate you and leave your body in the fucking woods, Iâd strongly suggest not poking me.â
Elijah lifts both hands in mock surrender. âUnderstood. Just thought it would be nice to know where weâre going to be getting these answers.â
âWhereâs your car?â
He points to a silver sedan parked near my bike.
âYou drive.â I walk around to the passenger side, and after he presses a button on the key fob, I climb in.
âWhere to?â
âHere.â I thrust my phone at him and watch him carefully as he reads the name of the contact weâre headed to meet. When he turns to me, anger clear in his sharp gaze, I decide I can trust him when it comes to finding out what happened to Delaney.
Anything else? I donât trust him as far as I can throw him, which, as you can imagine, is not very far.
âJ? This is the person who was texting you when you were unconscious.â
I glare at him. âHis name is Jack.â Elijah stiffens, his mouth flattening into a tight line as he stares at me.
âJack?â he asks, his voice tight.
âYeah. Too much of a coincidence for you too?â
âFuck yes, it is.â He tosses my phone back at me. âI know where that is.â
Weâre pulling onto the highway before I manage to get my rage under control enough to have a conversation. âHow often did you go out on hunts with Delaney?â
âAbout three times a week for nearly a year. Then I took off. But we talked at least once a week.â
âWhy?â
âWhy what?â
âWhy were you two friends? How did you bond? You said it wasnât sexual, so then what was it?â I really doubt my sister would have made friends with a vampire. Unless it was for a damned good reason.
He casts a curious glance my way. âNot every relationship has to have a sexual undertone.â
âIâm not saying it does. But if Delaney were into you, it would explain why she didnât kill you on sight.â
Elijah chuckles. âShe wasnât nearly as tough as you are. She trusted easier.â
Heâs not wrong. For as strong as Delaney was, she gave people the benefit of the doubt. Me? I assume everyone wants to kill me until Iâm proven wrong. âAnd she died for it.â
âPossibly,â he agrees. âAs I told youâI saved her. After that, I donât know. We just bonded. Sheâd lost people. Iâd lost people. A friendship was formed.â
âHow long did she know Jack?â
âFrom what I gathered, a while before I came into the picture. They had a bit more complicated relationship.â
âThey were sleeping together?â
Elijah shrugs.
