26: A Lot Alike

I relaxed on my bed, my face pointed at the ceiling with the lights off. 0000 hours. My eyes flickered closed. And when they did, the door slid open. Funny how shit went down right when you were about to go to sleep.

The lights hummed on but I stayed in my position, listening to the footsteps tapping against the tiles.

“What happened?”

Carmen talked like she was a teacher about to give me a scolding for not turning in my homework. Wasn’t in the mood for that. Not from anyone—but especially not from her.

“Alisa and Jade told me you punched Walsh in the mouth.”

“If you already know what happened, why are you asking me?”

“I had to make sure I heard it right. I thought it was a joke at first.”

I slowly sat up on the edge of my bed. Carmen stood there, arms crossed and eyes unblinking as she burned a hole through me.

“You should be upset with yourself.”

“I’m upset,” I sighed. “Didn’t get a chance to finish that pizza. You know, Alisa’s always eating more than her share. Strange how such a tiny girl can put away so much—”

“You broke his jaw.”

Hearing it made me smirk. I cracked my knuckles, still feeling some of the lingering effects of the punch. “Good to know he’s hurting worse than me.”

“A broken jaw is a simple matter for the Medical Bay. And for a man like Walsh, he probably enjoyed it. You’re talking about a man who took delight in giving himself a concussion because it meant he broke his opponent’s nose… in a boxing match.”

“I take it you found out a little more about our friend here.”

She nodded and walked toward me, going over whatever information was on her tablet. “Bronson Walsh. He’s got a rap sheet—as expected. A failed career as a boxer and MMA fighter—as expected. But I kept digging and I found something that was interesting… Does the name James Walton sound familiar to you?”

I thought about it for a moment but nothing came to me.

“James Walton was a former Omega,” Carmen continued. “Approximately twenty years ago. He had an extraordinary career by Omega standards. Took him only five years to get to Prime. He was talented.”

“Is there a reason you’re telling me all of this?”

“The information was classified but I managed to get ahold of it. His name was tied to the preliminary stages of the first Slayer Project.” She paused long enough for me to raise an eyebrow.

“Go on…”

“The project was under wraps. Very few people knew about it. Dr. Redgrave and a small team reviewed all of the potential candidates. They narrowed it down to two—Oliver Drake and James Walton. As you already know, your father was the one selected.”

“And Walton?”

Carmen looked at her tablet and shrugged. “There’s nothing else of note about him. He had a modest career for a Prime. Retired just recently after more than two decades of service. He lives alone with his wife.”

“Okay… You still haven’t explained why this matters.
