Chapter Nine

There are two Luces. I blink, confusion making its way to horror. When Nikolai said the ancient one was creating a monster with Luce’s blood, this is not what I thought he meant.

Other Luce strides in, hair black as the inky night sky. Nobody moves, as everyone is too busy looking between silver-haired Luce and black-haired Luce.

My Luce watches her, then says, “Lucia.”

Well, at least the slight name difference will help with some of the confusion. Lucia stares at Luce, her jaw dropping when she realizes she’s looking at her double.

Even with the stolen blood, the ancient vampire wasn’t able to make a perfect copy. Luce’s silver hair and red magic are unique to her, and even someone with the same blood in her veins can’t imitate that.

“What the fuck are you?” Lucia asks, her hands forming a claw shape. Black smoke writhes around her, building up and moving like snakes swimming through the air.

Luce takes a step forward. “The original, babe. You’re just a cheap imitation.”

I grit my teeth. Maybe she shouldn’t egg on the angry witch who’s clearly here to kill some vampires.

“I would never turn into a monster like you,” Lucia growls. “If anyone is fake, it’s me. How did you get my face?”

Luce rolls her eyes. “Not sure if you were listening in, but I was kidnapped and had some blood stolen.” Her words go hollow when she says that, but she recovers quickly. “Then apparently he made you.”

Lucia strides forward, holding her hand out with magic, and Luce rushes her, grabbing her hand and pointing it at the ceiling before the magic explodes out of the imposter. A boom shakes the building, and the magic plunges into the painted cathedral ceiling, the plaster cracking and splintering, and wooden beams groan from the impact.

“Listen to me,” Luce says. Before she can keep talking, though, Lucia punches her square in the face. It doesn’t seem to truly harm her, but she does stumble back.

Jacob, shockingly, rushes the new witch, whose eyes widen when she sees him.

“You’re just a kid,” she gasps. He stops, seemingly confused by her hesitation. Witches don’t usually care about the age of a vampire’s body. She crouches, moving to be eye level. Her hand brushes his cheek, her magic fleeing her.

Every eye in the room is on the pair. Even I hesitate to make a move. I know what Luce is capable of, and it stands to reason that another version of her would be just as dangerous.

Jacob sighs, stepping forward and putting his arms over her neck and burying his face in her throat. Just like that, he really is a kid again. He never had that opportunity, not really. When he was first turned, his still-human mother tried to kill him, and he decided he’d be strong and infallible after that.

Who would have thought that all he needed was a warm hug?

The scent of blood suddenly permeates the room. Jacob’s reaction was a ploy so he could bite her. I don’t know why I thought it could be otherwise.
