Roxie

I tried to drop Eva off before heading out to find the druid. Marie-Elise might be a lesser druid, but that didn’t mean she was weak. The term lesser druid only really meant she didn’t have a link to plants and trees the way a higher druid did. It was classist bullshit.

Her link to creepy crawlies was probably just as powerful as that of a higher druid to its trees. And since she seemed to have figured out a way to turn insects and reptiles into giant versions of themselves that she could sic on other people, I’d say she might even be at the top of the druid food chain at this point.

Hell, she could raise an army of enormous termites and have them take out the trees of any higher druid who went against her.

Regardless, Eva was having none of me dropping her off. And the thing was, I didn’t have a car right now and since I’d sent my trusty gargoyle away, I needed Eva to drive. She didn’t like the suggestion that she wait at Dagger Palace while I used her car.

I didn’t like the fact that we hadn’t gotten all that far in our self-defense training. She pretty much knew to be aware of the exits and use them. But that was it.

“What do you have on you?”

She looked at me with a frown on her face. “On me?”

I waved a hand. “For protection.” The woman had once shocked the hell out of me by handing me an extremely powerful magical bomb, but I was guessing she didn’t own too many of those. “Artifacts, weapons, shield spells?”

She brightened. “Oh! I traded with one of the daggers last week for a spelled knife. I throw it and it hits its mark and comes back to me.”

She unzipped her backpack and dug through the mess inside.

I pulled a knife and held it to her neck.

“Um, Roxie?” This was mostly squeaked instead of spoken.

“You can’t keep your handy dandy knife in your backpack. You’ll be dead before you can get your hands on it.”

I sheathed my knife and scooched forward in the seat so I could undo one of the sheathes strapped around my hips.

She took the sheath but held it with two fingers as she watched it like it was a squid.

This was going to be a long day.

Twenty minutes later I had her geared up with her magicked knife in the sheath at her back and we were out on the road where I’d had my run in with the druid. Maybe I should have warned Eva that the last interaction with the woman had left me without a car. She didn’t have a gargoyle she could fly on if her car was squished by a toad or something nutso like that.

“Last time I saw her, she was driving in that direction,” I said, wrapping my hand around the totem from Mirabel.

Eva headed that way, driving toward the west as I tried to decide if the wood was getting warmer in my hand or if that was just my body heat affecting its temperature.
