It is, in a word, perfect.

Thirteen

“Gracie?” Boone wakes me up before dawn.

No, Levi wakes me before dawn. I can call him by his first name, now, and I ought to.

Sitting on the edge of the bed and already dressed, he rests his hand on my knee. “I’ll go back to my room now.”

“Why?” I mumble into my pillow. A chill saturates the room. It’s too warm beneath the blankets. I don’t want to get out.

“I figured you wouldn’t want everyone knowin’ our business. If I stay here, they’ll draw untoward conclusions.”

“I don’t care about their untoward conclusions.”

“I should’ve guessed,” he says, taking my hand. “There’s one other thing.”

I sit up and look at him, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. “What is it?”

“I’m fair sure I can’t get you with child,” he whispers, “but I bought a potion at the charm shop when no one was paying attention. It’s in one of my bags, in my room.”

I’d been thinking I should make an early-morning visit to the charm shop, but if Levi’s already taking care of things, all the better.

“I’d appreciate it,” I say. But I don’t have to dance around words with Levi. He ain’t a fae, and I can thank him outright. I trusted him with my body; I can trust him with my gratitude. “Thank you.”

He puts on his hat and tips it at me. I hold out my arms. Grinning, he leans down and gives me a brief hug.

“I’ll be back in a minute,” he says. “Then we’ll have some breakfast.”

“And take the witch her necessary supplies.”

Looking thoughtful, he says, “There were some odd requests on that list.”

“I got the feeling she weren’t being entirely forthcoming.”

“I had the same feeling, too,” he says.
