ALL WORK, AND ALL PLAY

“Where are we going?” I asked after being in the car for over an hour. Quillian’s hands moved to the steering wheel as he reclined on his seat.

“Oloh.” He answered, and my brows furrowed.

“The demon’s territory?” He shook his head, and that familiar smirk tugged at his lips, and his dimples followed. I watched, transfixed on the movement, unable to look away. “You’re taking me on a date into the demon’s territory? Just you and me, no backup?”

As he turned the car to the left, homes and structures resembling those in Kinavari were visible. However, this place had unique architecture. The gothic-arched structures varied in size and complexity. Their pallets ranged from the most vivid blues, oranges, and greens to the monochromatic shades of grays, magenta, and browns. Each building is comprised of a series of emblems by the building's flying buttress.

“Who said anything about not having a backup?” he asked, his grip on the steering wheel tightening. I turned my attention to the rearview mirror to see if any other car was following us. His eyes dilated, and his head bobbed up. I then opened the window and leaned my head out to get a better glimpse of the winged vampires whose dotted outlines I could make from above us. Each of the vampires was dressed in all black attire.

“Those are your new security and will follow you around Esneoh,” he replied. I moved my head back inside the car, opting to keep the window open.

“I don’t need it,” I answered as I reclined on my seat, lifted my green silk ruched skirt, and flashed him the dagger I had strapped around my thighs.

“I can’t have you going around stabbing other beings in Esneoh.” He shook his head, attempting to seem stern, but I noticed the small form of dimples threatening to take form.

“Why not?”

He slowed down the car as we approached a traffic light and turned his head to me. “Because they think you’re human-”

“And humans can’t stab vampires?”

“Yes, no, and yes,” he replied, the amusement in his voice hard to shake. He lifted the steering wheel and continued driving ahead, taking a few turns through several streets.

“That makes perfect sense,” I answered mockingly. I slowly pulled down my dress yet kept my hand clasped around the dagger now on display. Esneoh was still an unfamiliar territory, and even though I had the covering of the Kingsley’s, I wasn’t stupid enough to completely let my guard down. This wasn’t Jersey Hill; I was dealing with an entirely different breed of assholes, and lowering my guard was a matter of life and death.

“They think you’re human, and we should keep it like that?” His gaze turned to me, and an unfamiliar warmth I couldn’t place followed.

“They underestimate me.”

“I underestimated you, and look where we are? You managed to sink your claws into me, and I ended up giving you a ring, a vow, and now I’m even taking you on a date. Life can come at you hard sometimes.
