Lulu’s heart seemed to leap into her throat. She swallowed hard and closed the Bible. Then, with trembling fingers, she let it fall open again. This time the book of Isaiah appeared, and her eyes locked on the last two verses of the fifty-seventh chapter:

But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

Suddenly Lulu recalled a conversation she had with Autumn: “When you know the Lord, everything in life takes on a new meaning, and you can face the hard times with joy and peace of mind.” Lulu had no peace of mind, and the Bible in her hands told her the wicked have no peace.

Lulu didn’t understand all about “the wicked,” but she was sure she qualified before God … God, whom she now had no doubt existed. He had put a Bible in her hands and spoken to her as clearly as if He had shouted from the sky. Lulu Taggart had to have a Bible. She must know more.

She waited until she heard the women leave, then made her way to the counter. She was the only customer in the store. Mauldin smiled at her, then noted what she had in her hand. He tried not to show his surprise.

“What’s the price on this, Mr. Mauldin?” Lulu asked, laying the Bible on the counter.

“Three dollars.”

“All right,” she said, pulling a man’s wallet from the hip pocket of her Levis. “I need to ask a favor of you.”

“Yes?”

“I’m paying for the Bible with my own money, Mr. Mauldin, so it won’t go on my father’s bill.”

“I see,” Mauldin nodded.

“I don’t want Pa to know I’m buying it. You understand?”

“Of course, Lulu.”

“You won’t tell him?”

“Of course not.”

“He’d beat me good if he found out, Mr. Mauldin.”

“I understand, Lulu. He won’t find it out from me. But I would suggest you be real careful where you keep it at home.”

“I will,” she said, returning the wallet to its place. She pulled a slip of paper from her shirt pocket and handed it to him. “Here’s the list of things I need.”

Soon Lulu was on her way home. She kept the Bible on the wagon seat next to her and stopped occasionally to read for a few minutes. She looked especially for the verses Autumn Lynne had quoted to her.

As Lulu drew within sight of the Taggart ranch, she placed the Bible in a paper bag, then put it in a box with groceries. No one ever helped her carry the boxes into the house. She would hide the Bible in her dresser and read it every chance she got.
