Girl evacuee aged seven: One thing that upset me was that the only farm worker was not allowed to sit at the table with the family. He had to have his meal at a separate table.

Boy evacuee aged twelve: There were lots of apple and pear orchards. We thought you could just help yourself. The village kids told us we shouldn’t do it. The police came to see our hosts and they put a stop to it.

Girl evacuee aged nine: Anything wrong in the house was always my fault because the farmer’s daughters ganged together. They broke my only doll and tore my books. When mum collected me she was in tears. She could see every bone in my body.

BUT some had happy memories …

Girl evacuee aged eight: We helped on the farm at weekends. I used to like watching the milking done. It was done by hand. We used to love the lambing season when we could go and see the lambs after they were born. It was all new to us. In the town we only had factories and shipyards.
