Chapter 26

Nate

I pull into a parking spot in front of the apartment and smile over at my sleeping beauty. I can't believe I used to think I was happy. Life without this woman was miserable in comparison to now.

I cherish every second I get to spend with Lacey and I always crave more. Nothing can compare to falling asleep next to her and waking up with her in my arms. I can't wait for it to be a permanent thing. For us to have the same address and we never have to sleep in separate beds again.

I open Lacey’s door and carefully unbuckle her seatbelt, the last thing I want to do is wake her up. She’s been exhausted lately and I know going back to work tomorrow is going to be tough for her.

I slide my arms under her legs and back then hold her tightly against my chest. She looks so tiny like this.

If we’re having a little girl, I hope she looks just like her mama. I’d love that. If we have a little boy, I hope he looks like me. I’d love to have a little mini-me.

I make it to our floor and am trying to put the key in the lock when Mrs. Williams steps out of her apartment.

“Did you drug her?” She asks rudely.

“Hello to you too, Mrs. Williams. And no, I did not drug Lacey. She fell asleep in the car and I didn’t want to wake her.”

“It’s only nine, she should be awake. I think you drugged her.”

This woman has hated me since I started dating Lacey. She’s made it her personal mission to try to keep me away.

“She’s tired because she’s pregnant. Please leave my girl and our baby alone. I’ll have them out of this apartment before the baby’s born so you won’t need to worry about the noise of an infant.”

“She’s pregnant?” She whispers like it’s a secret. Her eyes soften as her gaze falls on Lacey.

“Yes, she’s eight weeks along.”

“You really love her, don’t you?”

“I do. She’s my whole world.”

“Well don’t fuck it up,” she says with a single nod. She heads back into her own apartment, slamming her door on my stunned face.

I quickly open Lacey’s door and kick it shut as I shake my head. That lady confuses me so much. One second, she hates us and the next she almost seems like she cares.

I carry Lacey to the bed and lay her gently in the center. She instantly curls on her side; her soft snores fill the air. One side of my lips lift into a smile. She’s perfect.

I take off her shoes and carry them back to the front door. Twisting the lock, I check the handle to make sure it’s secure. I grab two bottles of water before heading back to the bedroom again.

I quickly strip down, climbing into bed next to Lacey. Her body is drawn to mine like a magnet. She snuggles closer without even waking up. I slide my arm under her neck and pull her body against mine.
