“When I see Lou again?” Beckett asked from the backseat.

I slowed at the red light and glanced back at him. He loved Lou so much and I was glad about that. I loved seeing those two together. He followed her around just like Cordelia did. Seeing their bond and the relationship they were building, I tried not to interfere too much.

“I don’t know, bub. I’ll have to talk to your mom about coming for another visit.”

“Okay,” he said, accepting my answer.

As I turned back to focus forward, the light turned green. It’d been less than a month since I met Beckett and it amazed me just how much I adored the little boy. I counted down the days to when I could see him again once he was back with his mom. In the short time that I’ve known Cordelia, I liked her and missed her too when she was with her mom. I never thought I could love a kid that wasn’t related to me, but Cordelia was changing my mind.

Another fifteen minutes, and I was pulling into Dahlia’s gated driveway. I pulled around to the front door and cut off the ignition. I unbuckled Beckett and helped him down before we walked to the front door. A maid opened it and she had to go find Dahlia. Before Dahlia joined, Cordelia came running down the hall and out the front door. She jumped right into my arms, hugging me around my neck. I’d kind of thought she just tolerated me because two of her favorite people liked me. But maybe she actually liked me.

“Me no like that,” she said. Her hazel eyes narrowed, and I had to hold back a laugh.

“What don’t you like, sweetie?”

“You leave me.”

“I know, and I’m sorry. I promise we’ll do something just the two of us.”

She studied me as if she was trying to determine if I was telling the truth. Dahlia came to the door before she could speak.

“Cori, why are you out here?” Dahlia demanded.

“I say hi, Mommy,” she told Dahlia.

“That little girl is so damn sassy,” Dahlia grumbled.

“I wonder where she gets it from,” I muttered, but she heard me and flipped me off.

She ordered the kids to get into the house. “I have plans and Marlene said it’s time for your baths.”

I stooped down to let Cordelia down and to give Beckett a hug. The kids clung to me. My heart broke a little at the fact that I had to leave them behind. They held hands as they walked inside. I stood again to face Dahlia.

“I want to see them again this week,” I told her.

“Fine. See them when you want.”

“Your lack of care is endearing,” I sneered.

Dahlia rolled her eyes. “Whatever. When do you want the kids again?”

“Friday,” I said. “Morning.”

“Works for me. Are you keeping them all weekend?”

“Until Sunday. I’ll drop them off around noon.”

“I’m sure Marlene will be here if I’m not.”

She closed the door in my face before I could add anything else. I’d picked a winner to be the mother of my child.
