Chapter 20

Lacie took the diary out of her jacket pocket and placed it in on the desk. She went over to the coffee maker and poured a cup of coffee.”

“Okay, Karly, I’m listening,” she said, peering down at the red, leather-bound book. The first several pages were as Joanna said, silly, young girl stuff. The tagged pages told an entirely different story.

May 1st

I found out today that I am going to have a baby. Scott’s baby. He is over the moon. We are planning on a quick wedding. The last Sunday in June. Everything is just so perfect. Scott’s mother and my sister have a stormy past. At one time, they were the best of friends. You would never believe it now.

William Graves, Scott’s dad, was engaged to my sister. Mrs. Graves, Baxter back then, got pregnant by him, and he married her instead. Scott was born six months later. I have even heard rumors that Scott and I are brother and sister.

Joanna told me it was a vicious rumor, started by certain individuals who have nothing better to do than stick their nose into other people’s business. She would never do anything so terrible as denying her own child no matter what the circumstances.

What happened between my sister and Mrs. Graves has nothing to do with Scott and me or our baby.

I’m so excited. There’s a dinner at the church tonight. His mother and my sister will both be there. We are going to set them down together and tell them about the baby.

I pray every day that this baby will bring us all together again. I know it will. It has to.

We told Joanna and Mrs. Graves. At first, they were in such a state of shock that they couldn’t say a word. They just stared at us and then at each other. After it finally soaked in, they would soon be grandmothers. They seemed happy.

I’ve been so busy these last few days. Mrs. Graves wants to have the wedding in her back yard. She has a gazebo. Oh, it’s going to be so beautiful. A small wedding, just family and a few close friends, still there is a lot to do. Joanna and Scott’s mother have pitched in with the preparation. I believe God has answered my prayers, and we are going to be one happy family.

The girls and Daniel have put a fishbowl on the desk at his salon, suggestions for names. Daniel says the boys’ names have almost doubled the girls’. I don’t want to know the sex until he or she comes out and is safely in my arms. Scott can’t keep his hands off my belly. He says he wants the baby to know the loving touch of his father even before birth.

Scott came by the house tonight. He wanted to take me to dinner. Thank goodness, Joanna wasn’t at home. I could smell alcohol on his breath. When I asked him if he had been drinking, he said he’d only had a couple of beers that afternoon.
