That night the people held a council to decide what to do, but no one could suggest anything.

At last Coyote spoke up. He told them that as he had been passing Cloud Stopper Mountain, he heard a noise that sounded like a woman crying for help. Everyone at the council knew that this was very bad trouble because the mountain was so steep that Beautiful Woman could not come down, and no one could climb up to help her.

At last Hunter, Beautiful Girl’s brother, decided to ask I’itoi for help. He prepared a messenger, dressed all in white and wearing eagle feathers on his head. I’itoi received Messenger—Ah’atha—and asked him what the trouble was. Once Messenger told the story, Great Spirit told him he would help. He took some seeds from a gourd and traveled with Messenger to Cloud Stopper Mountain. At the bottom of the peak, he planted some gourd seeds under a big rock. Then he began to dance and sing.

This is the song I’itoi sang:

Come little gourd seeds, grow big;

Let your vines grow big and strong.

Send your vines up and send them far.

Grow, little gourd seed, grow fast.

Climb up these rocks and grow strong.
