Segregation

Saturday morning passed in a flurry of sweeping and dusting. I opened the windows, filling the studio with fresh air and cloud shadows. Finally, it was time to get myself ready. My hands shook, but my nerves settled as—with some jumping and wiggling—I pulled on my favourite jeans. Viridis helped me choose them back when I still lived at home; basically a lifetime ago. I turned in front of the mirror to appreciate how the denim accentuated my butt, reigning in the bulk of it. Chase came through the door, a plate of chips, soft-boiled eggs, and toast soldiers for dipping held in one hand.

“Jeans? How disappointing.” He slid out his desk chair and sat. “Want some chips?”

I pulled my shirt down to cover my butt. “Pass. I don’t eat an hour before working magick.”

“Oh, that’s today? Bummer. Okay. Don’t worry, I’ll clear out.” Something in the way he said it conjured guilt. Like I was usurping his space.

I fussed with my hair, trying to decide whether to tie it up or leave it wild. Elouera’s arrival was imminent, and I hadn’t visited Viridis a second time at the hospital, nor found a moment of peace in which to call him after Morr texted to say he’d woken. I had messaged telling him I missed him and loved him, that I’d been frightened for him, and that I was sorry about Corvo’s loss, but it wasn’t enough. I wasn’t holding space and supporting him as he would’ve for me. How was I supposed to reconcile that?

Leaving my hair down, I shadowed Chase, massaging his shoulders. Truth be told, having him in circle would be awkward. He’d find our low-level practices babyish compared to the power he had at his disposal. Tonight, after my friends left and his family dozed, Chase would take away my egg allergy forever. Nevertheless, there was a wrongness to his lack of integration into my world.

Our proximity gave him access to my mind.

“You’re straddling two worlds. Childhood and adulthood. Your past and your future.”

I leaned over his shoulder to kiss his temple. A knock echoed from the opposite end of the flat.

He stood abruptly, shutting off his monitor. “I’ll prepare a feast for afterwards.”

As Elaine greeted my coven in the kitchen, I pulled Chase close. “Thanks, my love. Morrigan doesn’t eat any animal products, so maybe cut her some carrots or whatever.”

We released each other as Morrigan came through the hall, leading the charge. She wore simple brown cotton pants and a plain white singlet that gave her white speckled skin a bit of colour. Talis brought up the rear, and I hoped the suitcase they pulled didn’t arouse Elaine’s suspicions. Talis’s clothes were also simple; cargo pants and a plain forest green tee. We didn’t look like witches. Between the two of them, Viridis and Indra held hands. Viridis wore a skirt that fell to his knees. It somehow looked really masculine, and it suited him, but I didn’t know if saying so was appropriate, or if I should just pretend everything was normal.
