Chapter Ten

The morning mist was full of heavy drizzle, making everything damp to the touch. Nothing apart from the odd creak of a damaged building, shifting on its foundations could be heard. No matter how much ground we’d already covered in a short space of time, I was sure the border was still a long way off. But I did discover a three-story building which, according to an aged sign, had once been an apartment complex for Severance officials. Its windows had blown out and part of it had collapsed, but the remainder seemed safe enough. I went back to tell the others.

“I found a deserted complex where I bet if we broke down some of the doors to the apartments, we’d find warmer clothing and maybe some left behind food implants for Helena.”

“I like the idea of breaking in someplace we’re not meant to be. Let’s go.” Zindra was as eager for an edgy adventure as she was the time she forced her tongue in my mouth.

“This isn’t a fun trip, Zindra. It’s serious. We can look for clothes and other supplies. Nothing else. Agreed?”

“Yeah, yeah, agreed,” she replied, pouting like a spoiled child.

“I am getting hungry,” Helena said quietly.

“Then let’s go find what we need. By the way, Blake, well done.”

Pete had finally acknowledged I was worth having around. I didn’t know whether to kiss him or punch him, so to be safe I just nodded and smiled. We crept out of our hiding place slowly.

“Do we have anything to break down a door?” Zindra asked Helena.

“It’s likely they’re all code controlled if it’s a Severance complex. I can probably hack our way in and open a door without any noise.”

It was good to get inside what remained of a place that had once been a luxurious reception area. The dust-covered couches were handcrafted, and the giant pots laying broken next to their fake plants must have cost a ton of credits. It made me angry to think how plain and sparse my living conditions had been compared to what stood before me.

“See how these bastards live? Now I can’t wait to see what their apartments look like,” I said.

“And you tell me not to take anything other than what we need, Blake. Why? They have way more than we ever did. It’s unfair and dishonest. What was the bullshit Pye always spewed about us being equal, and no one person having more than another? Just looking at what’s left of this reception area tells me what I need to know. Look at the shards of glass. It’s designed so you can’t see in.”

“Let’s find the stairwell and get out of sight. It’s getting too light for us to be hanging around down here.”

It was Pete who reminded us to forget about furnishings and concentrate on staying hidden. We made our way up to the first floor without any trouble. But the stairwell to the next floor was blocked with debris, making it impossible to go further. Not to be put off, we went back to the first floor.
