8.14 Interpreters

When English is not a witness’s first language it may be necessary to conduct the interview with an interpreter, depending on the wishes of the witness if they have sufficient understanding of English.

Interpreters should be briefed before the interview to explain the questioning techniques to be used and how they may impact on their interpretation, for example by not filling pauses when used deliberately to allow the witness to focus plus, accurately translating what has been said.

Questions should be directed to the witness for the interpreter to translate. A common mistake is interviewing the interpreter and not the witness.
