CHAPTER SIX

The meeting with the lawyer went smoothly, if not quickly. The older man made the changes to the prenuptial agreement and had it printed for their signatures.

Of course, Alastair got the senior law partner to do their paperwork.

The adoption paperwork was all in order, only requiring their signatures in several places.

"We will file after the wedding so that your status as a married couple can be attached to the petition." The grey-haired man put the papers in his briefcase. "Was there anything else?"

"Charlotte?" Alastair prompted her.

Feeling like she was in a waking dream, Charlotte slowly shook her head. Had she really just signed another prenuptial agreement with Alastair Papadakis? Was she really going to marry him? Tomorrow?

The lawyer left soon after, saying he would be back to file the paperwork for the wedding the next day.

"Your parents will be upset they aren't going to be here for the wedding," Charlotte said as she and Alastair left the formal dining room together.

She liked his parents and hated the thought of them being hurt.

"They will be here."

"They will? Aren’t they in Greece?"

“They are on their way here as we speak.”

“Oh.” He’d been that sure of her agreement?

Of course he’d had reason to be. Charlotte herself had told him she would do anything to remain a part of Gregor’s life.

“Did you want to invite your parents?” Alastair asked. “Your younger sister?”

Charlotte considered it but shook her head. They were all still mourning Mallory. Inviting them to attend her marriage-of-convenience wedding in the face of that deep grief seemed callous.

She turned to head up the stairs, not sure if she meant to see Gregor, start packing or hide in her room until things started making sense again.

All of this simply felt too unreal to take in.
