Chapter 5

Storm

I stride back into the building where the Descendants press junket is being held. The “suspicious activity” turned out to be a pap trying to get pictures of the vehicle Lennox arrived in. He skedaddled after some hard questioning, but ultimately, we deemed him as not a threat.

She’ll be relieved to know that. The fear that flashed in her eyes after I got off the phone was unmistakable. That wasn’t the only emotion I noted in her eyes—I can’t stop thinking about the way she kept looking at me during her last interview. It was sweet, wistful, yearning.

It made me want to pull her into my arms.

No. Stay cold. Keep your distance. Unless you like pain?

I shake my head quickly to clear it, flashing my security badge at the security team posted in the front of the building, even though they already know who I am. No sooner have I gone through the turnstile than I hear a woman screaming, then a second woman, then loud shouting.

Lennox.

I break into a sprint, shoving through the group of reporters waiting their turns to interview her. I ignore their yelps of surprise and knock away the movie banners that surround her chair like a fort.

Both directors’ chairs are on their sides. The tall light set up for photos is also toppled over, the bulb shattered.

Lennox is huddled on the floor. Her assistant Jen crouches beside her, her arms wrapped around her. Jen turns wide eyes to me.

“He went that way!” she gasps, pointing straight ahead, toward the back of the room where a door beneath a glowing red exit sign hangs slightly open.

I charge off in that direction. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what happened—her stalker made an appearance, and there was obviously some kind of scuffle.

Rage flares inside me. This asshole dared to lay a hand on Lennox.

My Lennox…

No. I shake my head. Not mine any longer.

The late afternoon sun dangles in the sky, casting long shadows down the sidewalk ahead of me. There aren’t a lot of places in the immediate area where he could hide, and unless he can leap buildings like Superman, he’s long gone.

Chest heaving, I skid to a halt, looking around once more, my fists clenching at my sides. I pivot sharply and head back inside the building. The first thing I’m doing is asking for the security cam footage—

I pause, my gaze falling on Lennox. She’s on her feet now, engrossed in conversation with Jen, her arms wrapped around herself. She looks small and timid. Frightened.

I walk over and lightly take her arm. It takes superhuman effort not to pull her into my arms. She looks up at me with huge eyes.

“Talk to me,” I say in a low voice. “What happened?”

“He—he snuck in somehow,” she says in a trembling voice. “I thought he was a reporter. When I realized who he was, he lunged at me. Grabbed my arm.” She extends the arm I just took. It’s speckled with bruises.

New rage flames up inside me.
