Chapter 9

Portia stared at her red hand while Mark came running into the kitchen.

“What was that?” he asked.

“That black dust. It burst into flame.”

“How?”

“The candle,” Portia said, pointing. “I can’t believe they were using pickaxes down there with that stuff all over the place. They throw off sparks. We could have been blown to bits. No wonder that miner was so panicked about magic.” She put her hand in a basin of water to cool the stinging pain. Mark kicked at one of the chairs behind her.

“Those tunnels are underneath the seawall.”

Portia’s eyes widened. “With the invader ships on the far side.”

“Yes. We should have asked more questions at the tavern.”

Portia nodded. “Collapsing in the seawall would be a lot faster than destroying the city’s defenses one ship at a time. There were so many ships out there past the wall that the city wouldn’t stand a chance if they got into the harbor. We should tell someone.”

“Who?” Mark asked, skeptical.

“The city guard?” Portia asked.

“And how do we know they’re not in on it?” Mark crossed his arms. “I don’t trust anybody in this city. From what I’ve seen, my company seems to own it. If we tell anyone, we run the risk of being grabbed and thrown into prison—or worse. What has happened to you in Coverack? We always took care of our own problems.”

Portia sat down heavily in a kitchen chair. “There are some people that are trustworthy. We have to find some here, or at the very least get more information we can bring back to Coverack.”

Mark shook his head at the word trust. “We won’t be going back to Coverack if we’re grabbed by the wrong people. I’m not going to trust anybody.”

Portia looked up at him, tilting her head.

“Except you.”

Portia nodded.

Judging by the amount of black powder in those tunnels, they didn’t have much time.
