Chapter 9
Portia stared at her red hand while Mark came running into the kitchen.
âWhat was that?â he asked.
âThat black dust. It burst into flame.â
âHow?â
âThe candle,â Portia said, pointing. âI canât believe they were using pickaxes down there with that stuff all over the place. They throw off sparks. We could have been blown to bits. No wonder that miner was so panicked about magic.â She put her hand in a basin of water to cool the stinging pain. Mark kicked at one of the chairs behind her.
âThose tunnels are underneath the seawall.â
Portiaâs eyes widened. âWith the invader ships on the far side.â
âYes. We should have asked more questions at the tavern.â
Portia nodded. âCollapsing in the seawall would be a lot faster than destroying the cityâs defenses one ship at a time. There were so many ships out there past the wall that the city wouldnât stand a chance if they got into the harbor. We should tell someone.â
âWho?â Mark asked, skeptical.
âThe city guard?â Portia asked.
âAnd how do we know theyâre not in on it?â Mark crossed his arms. âI donât trust anybody in this city. From what Iâve seen, my company seems to own it. If we tell anyone, we run the risk of being grabbed and thrown into prisonâor worse. What has happened to you in Coverack? We always took care of our own problems.â
Portia sat down heavily in a kitchen chair. âThere are some people that are trustworthy. We have to find some here, or at the very least get more information we can bring back to Coverack.â
Mark shook his head at the word trust. âWe wonât be going back to Coverack if weâre grabbed by the wrong people. Iâm not going to trust anybody.â
Portia looked up at him, tilting her head.
âExcept you.â
Portia nodded.
Judging by the amount of black powder in those tunnels, they didnât have much time.
