Mark insisted on spending the night, which was fine with me. But again he insisted on sleeping on the living room sofa, which was not so fine with me. But we made up for the separation with a memorable interlude in my bed upstairs before he went downstairs to intercept trouble, should any arise.

It was quiet all night.

I called Fujita the following morning.

“You know what Clive Christian cologne for men smells like?”

“What? Never heard of it. Why?”

I gave him a description of the Stranger in the Mirror. “If you see anybody who looks like that and he’s wearing a light cologne, get away from him as fast as you can and keep watch over your shoulder for him. We think he might be following us, and we have no idea about his motives or intent.”

“Why would he care about two people looking at election reports?”

“If I knew the answer to that I might have all the information we’ve been hunting for. Just stay alert. Please. And be careful.”
