Chapter 7
Pony/Anna
âI canât do this,â she said, gripping the envelope with the money heâd given her in both hands.
âYes, you can,â he replied, like this was no big deal at all, but she knew better and she was serious. She couldnât do this. She knew she couldnât because he wasnât the first person since Ethen had gone to prison to try to send her shopping. Puppyâs mother had done it too, and then called her useless when sheâd had a meltdown in the bread aisle. How did one even begin to find the right loaf when the list just said âbreadâ and there were a dozen brands, a million varieties, and she had no clue what everyone liked?
And this, what he wanted her to do first? This was going to be even harder.
Bowing over in the passenger seat, Pony did her best to put her head between her knees, the way heâd taught her yesterday when sheâd had a meltdown over which cup to use when she made her morning coffee. The man had a twenty-mug collection of all colors, shapes and humorous sayings. Ethen had had three coffee mugs, all exactly the same and no menagerie girl was allowed to use them.
âItâs a test, but an easy one,â Marcus had told her, arms folded across his chest, hip propped against the kitchen island, ankles lazily crossed while he watched her agonize in frozen indecision. âOut in the real world, honey, no one is going to care which mug you use. Take a deep breath, reach up your hand, and pick one.â
Easy to say, but what if she got the wrong mug? What if she picked his favorite, or picked one with sentimental value? What if she dropped and broke it?
âAny mug,â Marcus had coaxed her, and it took ten minutes and actual tears for her to finally put her hand on one and pull it down. âNow, put coffee in it and take a sip.â He waited while she obeyed. âSee? The world didnât end.â
No, but the effort had exhausted her and she ended up wanting to go back to bed instead of drinking coffee.
Now they were doing the dressing debacle.
âCanât I go back to Puppyâs and just get my own clothes?â she begged, but from the driverâs seat, already Marcus was shaking his head.
âI already told you, honey. I sent Spencer to get them before we left the hospital. Cynthiaâs mom threw everything out. Nothing of yours was left in that house.â
Sitting side by side in his vehicle, they stared through the windshield at the busy Goodwill. She felt sick.
âCanât you do it?â she begged him. âPlease, just this one time?â
âI can.â He nodded, then swung his head to pin her with the same stern look that over the last week she had both come to love and hate. It was a look that said heâd happily give her what she wanted, but she wasnât going to like how he did it. âIn this case, however, I really think you should do this yourself.
