CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
Trium dropped one leg and then the other into the scalding waters of the mountainâs hot spring. Palben had suggested a short trip to nearby Mistbound Mountain. It was a place of natural beauty as well as physical and spiritual cleansing. Most of the hot springs were found at sea level near the base of the mountain, but a special and very private accommodation had been built around a secluded hot spring that was widely regarded to have restorative properties, which could be found at the top of the mountain. Truth be told, it was a short, flat-topped mountain and no one knew how the best water made its way up there. The minerals within accompanied by the natural heat had been known to cure many ailments.
So he went. And with him came the usual entourage of soldiers and caretakers. But he finally had some time to himself after his sword training session. He could feel his muscles relax in the hot water. His mind also relaxed and drifted to faraway places as he wondered about the lands across the Sea of Epiphany and the magical beasts from stories of places afar.
He wondered on the size of neighboring kingdoms. His father had explained to him that Havenglade was considered a unique kingdom geographically. There was an immense and violent sea to the west, and a more tranquil sea south of the Tranquine fields where many tiny islands lay a dayâs journey offshore. To the north not much was knownâat least not to Trium. He knew that not far past their most northerly city of Greyglade the environment became harsh and cold, and to the east, tall, vast mountain ranges and dry badlands dominated the terrain.
Who knows what lie outside our small bubble of knowledge? he thought and let his head rest against the edge of the bath, allowing his eyes to drift closed.
An interruption in the form of a knock at the door presented itself.
A servant unlatched the door and conversed with the unseen guest.
The servant nodded affirmatively several times before taking a scroll, closing and re-latching the door.
âYour Highness, apologies for disturbing your bath,â she said with a hesitant expression.
âWhat do you have for me?â Trium asked, extending a wet hand out of the water for the scroll, which she handed over to him. Trium noticed the steam coming off his bare skin in the slightly chilled air of the room.
He snapped the military seal and unbound the scroll pulling it open from either end.
It read most peculiar, indeed.
