Chapter Fifteen

All five men swiveled around in their seats. The four helper-goons stood up, groping for their weapons and hastily pointing them at me. Only Hammerhead remained seated. “Black Cat,” he said, his voice faintly tinged with a Russian accent. I knew he’d overcome the brain damage that had made him think he was an old-school gangster, but I didn’t know his original accent had come back with it. “What are you doing here?”

“Oh, I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d drop by and say hi to my favorite semi-cyborg,” I replied, sauntering a few more steps down. I couldn’t see Peter, but I knew he was out there, putting his plan into place. I just needed to give him time to enact it. “I like the new digs. They’re so…” I smiled. “You.”

He didn’t care for my little quip. I watched the edge of the metal table he was holding onto crumple in his grasp. “I will ask you again, Cat, one last time. What are you doing here?”

“I’m looking for answers,” I said. Huh, maybe this would work out; maybe we wouldn’t have to fight about it. “About a possible kidnapping you and your guys pulled off a little while back.”

Hammerhead laughed. “And you think I’m just going to tell you about my business? How do I know you’re not wearing a wire? How do I know you won’t bring the police down on my head?”

I rolled my eyes. “I could bring this entire building down on your head and it wouldn’t even faze you. And honestly, you think I would work with the cops? To grab you? C’mon, Mr H, we’ve worked together before. Have you finally been hit in the head too many times to remember that little detail? Honestly, what kind of low-rent stooge do you take me for?” I waved a hand at his crew, all jutted jaws and wavering gun hands. “I have quality standards, OK? If you’re worried about the cops, look to your own flock first, that’s all I’m saying.”

“You callin’ us low-rent stooges?” one of the guys shouted.

“Shut up,” Hammerhead snapped at him, not breaking eye contact with me. He folded his massive arms. “I think you’d better leave, little kitty. Before I decide you need to be collared.”

Oh, better men than you have tried. I knew Peter had to be ready by now, and I was also positive that there was nothing more to be gained from my attempts at friendly conversation. Hammerhead didn’t want to play nice? Then it was time to get rough.

“I think I’m gonna go with ‘no’ on that offer,” I said, watching his twitchy crew get even twitchier. The one on the right was about to fire, I could tell from his stance. I focused hard on him, then triggered my internal probability pulsator. This guy was about to get unlucky. “But you’re going to answer me either way.”

“Answer this!” the guy shouted, stepping boldly forward as he fired his first shot… which
