Mr. Poison Shares a Musangwe Story

Yet another vicious, centuries-old African martial art is called Musangwe and comes from the other end of the continent in South Africa. Essentially it’s the sort of bare-knuckle brawling glamorized by mustachioed nineteenth- and early twentieth-century fighters in Western nations. A match only ends when one of the fighters can no longer continue. But when nobody gets knocked out and neither party is willing to concede, things can get a little out of hand. One of the fighters, Tshilidzi “Poison” Ndevana told a story to The New York Times of one such occurrence: “The longest fight was in 1998 and lasted five days,” Poison said. “They just kept fighting for around two hours each day. Neither fighter wanted to give in. The spectators had to call the village elders to come in and convince them to make it a draw.” Poison didn’t mention whether or not there was a rematch, or if the two became completely dedicated to nonviolence and opened a florist shop together.
