EIGHTEEN

“You okay? That guy seemed a little wound up,” Amy said, walking in right after my father walked out. When I didn’t reply right away, she looked a little closer. “Oh, you do not look okay. Can I get you anything?”

Once, when I was still in elementary school, my mother let me go to a waterpark with a friend. I’d hated every part of it, but none as much as the pool with relentless waves of overly chlorinated water crashing over me as I desperately tried to fight my way to safety through the throngs of people in the water all while doing everything I could to keep my footing. I still had nightmares about it.

I felt the same way now as waves of emotion crashed over me, making it hard to catch my breath.

“Is he gone? Is it safe to come in?” Crystal called, poking her head around the bakery door. I didn’t reply to her either, and I saw her eyes widen when she caught sight of Amy’s concerned expression. “Oh, shit. I’m guessing that didn’t go well.”

The bitter laugh that burst out of me freed me from my momentary paralysis, and I dropped into my chair and lowered my head to the table. “No. No, that did not go well.”

“Aw, babe! I’m so sorry.” It wasn’t until Crystal pulled me into her arms that I realized tears were streaming down my face. “I know what will help.” She pulled back from the hug and looked down at me. “Hold please.”

She hurried to the hot beverage station behind the counter and pulled a few tins out of the cabinet above the espresso machine. Without measuring, she tossed a little of each into an empty tea bag that she tucked into a large mug before pouring hot water over it.

She was back at my side in moments. “This will help. Drink it all up.” Her hand darted out as I lifted the mug to my mouth. “But, you know, maybe give it a moment to cool, first. You know the drill.”

I rolled my eyes at her. “I’m upset, not dumb. I just wanted to smell what you put in it.”

Her smile made the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes crease. “Little of this, little of that, and a hefty pinch of magic. Have a little faith in my abilities.” She winked.

“Again with the magic?” Amy chuckled. “Do you also put it in your lattes? Because I could seriously use one.”

“One magical latte coming right up.” I caught the glint of mischief in her eyes and groaned internally. Poor Amy. She was about to have the awakening of a lifetime.

“You’d better get her something to eat to go with it,” I called over to Crystal who was humming to herself as she tapped coffee grounds into the espresso machine wand. She nodded without turning around. “Grab a chair, and make yourself comfortable,” I said to Amy, shooting her a smile that probably came out more crooked and creepy than welcoming.
