Chapter 26

To Trust and Transform

“Who’s that guy on your porch E? He kinda looks familiar but I can’t place him” Dylan asked as they parked, taking in the tarp covering what was left of the garage doors.

“I have no idea,” Erion replied.

“That’s Virgil,” Aden yelled, jumping out of the car. “He’s the one from NOLA, he’s the one who took Jameson.” He ran towards Virgil, the air warming around him with each step, his senses heightening, preparing for battle.

“Calm down,” Virgil commanded. He looked at Aden with serpentine eyes. A strange power behind his words stopped Aden in his tracks, stealing any ounce of fight he had in him. “I don’t have Jameson, but I think we all know who does. My ancestors met with your ancestors long ago and set a course of events into motion that we now deal with. I’m on your side and here to help you, why do you think I sent you to my friends down there?”

“What happened to your accent?” Aden asked.

“Not sure if that’s the most pressing issue, but that was part of the ruse I needed to play to fit in as a New Orleans bartender.”

“So, you’re not immortal then? You’re not the same Virgil from back then?” Erion asked.

“Not immortal, but still pretty hard to kill if that’s what you’re thinking. Virgil is a family name passed down. While we’re not immortal, we do live a very long time, so I am only one generation removed from the Virgil that met with your families back in the colonies.

“How do we know anything you’re saying is true?” Hoyt asked, walking up standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Aden, the other guys following suit and standing strong as if being led by Leonidas.

“I’ve been trying to help all of you, but I’ve been blocked by something. The balance of magick is failing and a darkness is rising, one which had woken from its long slumber. It’s none too happy. I was able to divert the police from investigating anything that happened both here at your lab and at the cafe. If I didn’t want to help you, I would have done nothing and allowed them to figure out that something more was going on.

“I’ve also watched over and checked in on each of you over the years. Dale, perhaps you remember conversation with a kind barista at Jaho, or Erion, maybe you remember that funny tourist you spoke with at Zion? Dylan, that man you spoke with after saving the child, remember him?”

“How were you in all those places at once?” Dale asked.

“You’re the protector, aren’t you?” Hoyt responded.

“Wait, you were with all of us, but what about Hoyt? You didn’t say anything about him.” Erion said.

“Listen, I know you have questions, but we don’t have time. Yes, I have watched over you all and sought to protect you. And yes, my abilities run in the direction of being very efficient with traveling. And no, I did not check in on Hoyt, there were complications.

“That aside, I’ve come to give you this journal from my family.
