New Beak

A Greylag Goose’s Story

Vitória after being rescued

coast of São Paulo, Brazil.

In 2015, a greylag goose was found in Ilha Comprida, on the coast of São Paulo, Brazil. She was

injured and had lost most of her beak. Rescuers thought she might have been attacked by dogs

or hurt by humans. The goose was taken in by biologist and environmental technologist Cristian

Negrão at Amigos do Mar, Friends of the Sea. Negrão named the goose Vitória, a Portuguese word

that means “victory,” something that everyone who met Vitória wanted for her.

This was the first time Amigos do Mar had helped a bird without a beak, though, and Vitória

had lost a lot of weight because she wasn’t able to eat the plants and grain that greylag geese

normally eat. Vitória was also angry and aggressive. She didn’t want people to touch her, but

eventually she trusted Negrão enough to allow him to feed her baby food. Negrão knew he had

to do something more to help Vitória, though, since her beak would never grow back and she

was struggling to eat and drink.
