IS COFFEE BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH?

In the past, a lot of health advice included the suggestion to stop drinking coffee—it can raise your blood pressure, cause heart disease, make you anxious, interfere with sleep, and even cause cancer. However, research has now shown the opposite—caffeine is actually good for your health. Older studies reporting associations with cancer and heart disease have been refuted for various reasons. The World Health Organization has taken caffeine off its carcinogen list. In 2015, Ming Ding at Harvard School of Public Health and her colleagues published an extensive long-term study of over 200,000 people, examining associations between coffee consumption and health outcomes.88 They reported an 8–15 percent decrease in risk of death among caffeinated coffee drinkers, with greater benefit for those who drank more coffee. The authors noted a decreased risk of death from heart disease, neurological diseases, and suicide among coffee drinkers. There was no association between coffee drinking and risk of death from cancer. Other studies have found that coffee drinkers may have a lower risk of developing heart disease (such as heart attack, heart failure, and stroke), type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, uterine and liver cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, and gout.89
