The same was true in other rooms: a mix of little and large, huge and small.

“I think there must have been a lot of respect between the Sprites and the Giants,” Anna said, looking at the platforms that ran along the edges of the walls. “This place is built so that eye contact can be maintained at all times. It’s been created for happy communication between the two groups.”

Before they set off back to the Sprite village, Billy used his Swiss army knife to help his friends pick amazingly ripe fruit from the trees and bushes.

They were blown away by what they tasted—the smallest bananas with the biggest flavor; a fruit that looked like a plum yet tasted more like bubblegum and changed to all the colors of the rainbow in the light. Then Basil showed them how to cut the bottom off an orange fruit and squeeze out some sort of smoothie deliciousness. Even Andy, who thought he hated fruit, tucked in with gusto.

He let out a little fart, which sounded like a high-pitched whistle.

“Sorry, guys, blame all this fresh fruit,” he said, and everyone rolled about giggling, apart from Cassia who’d fainted.

“Now that we’ve had a good look around, and it seems that any danger is long gone, we should get going,” said Anna. “All the Sprites were terribly worried about you, Basil, and they’ll want to know you’re safe.”

The group retraced their steps back down the mountain path, across the river, up the stream, and carefully through the Boona-infested woods, back to the Sprite village. As they walked up the track, the other Sprites saw them approaching and started to line the path, clapping and cheering, like a fluttering tunnel.

“Chief Mirren!” Basil cried, flying straight to her. “I’s sorry for goin’ off on my own. I knows I’s in trouble. But the map really did lead somewhere special—I needs to tell you and the other Elders alls about it!”

“Basil! I’m so relieved that you’re safe,” Chief Mirren said with a smile. Then she looked serious. “But you should not have gone alone. We’ll discuss this later, as well as this special place you’ve found. But I’m sure our human friends should be returning home now as it’s late in both our worlds.”

Billy nodded. “Yes, we must get going. Please don’t be too hard on Basil. He was just trying to do the right thing, even if it wasn’t in quite the right way.”

Basil gave his friend a grateful smile.

“Before we go, we want to speak to you about the Rhythm, Chief Mirren,” said Billy. “My grandad told me that when things go wrong in nature it’s often the water. The plants on the banks of the river we crossed today looked awful, and we’ve noticed stuff like that in our world, too.”

“Water transcends all boundaries so, even though our worlds are separate, it could be possible that the problem with the Rhythm may be coming from your world. If this is the case, we would be powerless to fix it,” Chief Mirren said thoughtfully.
