The last time I looked in on an unconscious heart patient it was Sid. Now I was looking down at Lucy. A tube ran out of her mouth and a drainage tube out her back. They had gone in through the side, between the ribs, and that area was bandaged. But she looked calm and at peace as she slept deeply despite the periodic chiming of alarms from all the machines in her room.

Ten days in the hospital followed, but finally the day came when we could bring Lucy home. Martha and I were so thankful that we stopped trying to get her to acclimate to her crib. This child needed her mother and I wanted her there with us. I told Martha this and she scooped up Lucy and laid her in the center of the bed. Lucy kicked her feet up for the first time since she was home, lifting them all the way to her face. After that we slept soundly, loving each other more than ever.
