Chapter 22
Brody
I awoke with a start. I felt gross, groggy. Like Iâd been asleep for four days instead of four hours. By the time I mustered up enough energy to sit up right, it was dark âsave for the one lamp by the couch Kate must have left on for me.
âHello?â I rasped, wondering if she was still around.
âShe had some business to take care of,â Dylan said from behind me.
I turned and found him digging into the pot pie Irene must have left for me. I didnât mind that my brother helped himself. I wasnât hungry and I never wanted to waste food, so it was better off in his belly rather than mine.
âDid she say if sheâll be back?â I asked, struggling to stand. My joints ached.
âShe said she was going to try.â Dylan looked me over from head to toe. âTake it easy, man. Sit back down. You look like youâre about to puke.â
I gritted my teeth. âI donât need to puke.â
âWhat do you need? Iâll get it for you. Iâll even add green food coloring so you donât feel left out of the celebrations today.â
I grimaced. âI can handle it, Dyl. Stop being nice, youâre freaking me out.â
âIâll have you know that Iâm always nice, itâs just that the rest of our siblings are saints in comparison and they make me look bad.â
âIs that what you tell yourself?â
âYep. Want a slice?â
âNot hungry.â
âKate said youâd say that. Iâm bringing you a plate. Donât be a big baby and eat all of it. Iâll tell on you to Irene.â
âPlease donât. She scares me.â
âPretty sure she scares all of us.â
âEven Boone?â
âEspecially Boone. Our sister could kick all of our asses while drunk and blindfolded if she wanted to.â
My younger brother brought over a slice of the pot pie and set it down on the coffee table in front of me. He sat down next to me; one arm slung across the back of the couch.
âDadâs on his way back from Liberty,â Dylan informed me. âWe told him about the diagnosis last night. He needs to wrap up things at the garage, but heâll be back in town to take care of you.â
Our father, Bill Callaghan, had been in and out of our lives when we were kids. He had a pretty nasty gambling habit. We didnât learn until recently that his bookie had him working questionable jobs to pay off his loans under threat of harming us if he didnât. He was out now and turning his life around, having opened a small repair shop in Liberty. He wanted to stay close, but there wasnât much of a need to stay too close now that the kids were all grown up and doing their own thing.
âI donât need anyone to take care of me,â I grumbled. My head was finally starting to clear up from all the pre-treatment drugs they pumped into me. âBut Iâm glad heâs on his way home.â
âKate said she was going to try to make it back before seven tonight,â Dylan said.
