Today at Whitewater, more than a dozen buildings survive. The main cluster is north of the cemetery, and these are owned by the Hamilton County park system. The meetinghouse survives, as does the main residence, one of the barns, a milk house, an icehouse, workshops, and outbuildings. The buildings have been stabilized but are somewhat rundown. Still, it is possible to sense some of the harmony that MacLean saw. For people in the nineteenth century, visiting from squalid cities, a Shaker village must have looked a little like heaven. Perhaps enough to make the observer wonder whether the Shakers might know more about heaven than other religious groups did. The village itself was—consciously or unconsciously—a Shaker recruitment tool, and perhaps the best one they had.
