Chapter Eleven

In typical Cotswolds fashion, what had started as a chilly day was turning warm. With the spanakopita prepared and ready to pop in the oven when my guests arrived, Dickens and I took a break to relax in the sun in the garden. While he inspected the bushes and the stone walls, I considered whether it would be warm enough to serve the appetizers outdoors. Though I was a terrible gardener, I had managed to fill a few stone planters with burgundy dahlias and bright yellow chrysanthemums, and amazingly, they were thriving. I was famous for my brown thumbs in Atlanta, and not much had changed when I moved to England.

I admired the goat willow Ellie had given me in the spring along with the stone marker that read, “In Memory of Henry Parker.” Since Henry’s grave was in a Veterans Cemetery outside of Atlanta, Ellie wanted me to have something here to remember him by. I plucked a weed or two beneath the limbs and stepped back. “Henry, I’m serving one of your favorite meals tonight—pastitsio and Greek salad. Well, spanakopita too, but we both know you never cared for spinach.”
