IREENI Kamran, woman of endless mystery, is asleep in my arms.

Sometime in the night, she has unfurled herself from my father and is now nestled against my chest. Her hair smells of girly flavors and is as soft as I’d imagined before I stealthily ran the tips of my fingers over it.

Mumbling something incomprehensible, she shifts against me and stiffens. Her head pulls back and her gorgeous, sleepy eyes stare at me a moment before they widen significantly.

“Jem.”

I smile at the shock in her voice. “Good morning,” I reply quietly.

Her eyes flash about; over my face, down my body and hers.

“We’re in clothes,” she whispers back, sounding somewhat surprised, but also, relieved.

“Yes,” I confirm, frowning a little. “You came to hang out with Dad. Remember?”

Scrunching her face, she takes a cautious look over her shoulder and winces. “Is this what a threesome hangover feels like?” she whispers, easing herself away from me, while trying not to wake my Dad.

“I wouldn’t know,” I assure her, watching with amusement.

Her eyes meet mine. “Really?” she asks in apparent disbelief. “All the money in the world and you’ve never had a threesome?”

Raising an eyebrow, I adjust my pillow and settle back onto it. “What does money have to do with it?”

“I don’t know,” she says, shrugging one shoulder. “I guess if you couldn’t find anyone willing you could pay someone? Isn’t it every guy’s fantasy or something? Multiple women... doing stuff.”

Trying not to smile at her, I shrug too. “Not this guy, I guess. Did you sleep okay?”

Not looking happy about it at all, she nods. “Thanks for not kicking me out,” she whispers as her cheeks become pink.

“I’d never kick you out of bed,” I joke, flashing her my biggest smile.

Narrowing her eyes at me, she reaches up to do something to my face, but stops when her bandaged paw comes into view. Staring at her hand, she meets my eyes only a split second before she starts unraveling the gauze.

Once her hand is free, she rotates and flexes her hand before making a tentative fist and wiggling it loose.

“Your delicate fingers okay?” I ask, watching her face as she tests them.

“Yes, thank you.”

“Thought you preferred to stab,” I say, keeping my tone soft and light.

“It was a spur of the moment thing.”

“Did it stop whoever was bothering you?”

She almost laughs. “Not really. She’s still a big problem.”

“She?” I ask, surprised.

Giving me a tight half-smile, she pulls herself up carefully. “I broke a mirror.”

Staring at her, I try to understand as she maneuvers her way over me. Pausing mid-way, she wets her lips as she looks down at me. Lowering herself to briefly touch my lips with hers, she completes her dismount.

“Tell your Dad, thanks - for having me,” she whispers before rushing for the door. The outer door shuts only moments later and quiet fills the apartment.

Still half-stunned, but grinning like a fool I turn to Dad.

He’s awake. And I’d wager that the twinkle in his eye is a dead ringer for mine.
