CHAPTER FIVE
TWO MONTHS LATER
âGood mood or bad mood? I canât tell,â Graham said.
âWhy? Do I appear to be in a mood?â
âYes. Missing Abby?â
Fuck. I do miss Abby. So much it fucking hurts.
âNever mind,â Graham said. He looked over Mercyâs shoulder. âThank God!â
âThank God?â Mercy asked.
âYes. Misery loves company. I donât love misery,â he said. He pointed in the distance.
Mercy turned, and her heart skipped a beat. âAbby?â She dropped the paper in her hand and sprinted across the studio. âI canât believe youâre here. Donât you have an afternoon class on Friday?â
âI do have the power to cancel class,â Abby replied. Somehow, I donât think my students will miss me half as much as I miss you.â
âYou missed me?â
âMaybe a smidge.â
âI canât believe youâre here.â
âYou said I could watch you tape the show any time.â
âI did say that.â
âYou did.â
Mercy leaned in and kissed Abby soundly.
âI hope that means youâre happy Iâm here.â Another kiss. âSo good,â Abby mumbled.
âMm,â Mercy agreed. âI didnât think Iâd see you until tomorrow.â
âWell, here I am. I thought we could start our week early.â
âI like the way you think.â Mercy took Abbyâs hand and led her back toward Graham.
âThank God, youâre here,â he said.
âMe?â Abby asked.
âYes. Misery, here needs some company.â
Abby smirked. âAre you miserable, love?â
Mercyâs heart fluttered.
âNot anymore,â Graham joked. âI hate to break up this Hallmark moment, but we need to run through a couple of things before you take the desk, Mercy.â
âSorry,â Mercy apologized.
âDonât be,â Abby replied.
âYou can watch from the booth,â Graham said. âDonna! Can you take Abby to the booth?â
âSure.â
âIâll see you soon,â Mercy promised.
âIâll see you sooner,â Abby replied.
âSheâs got you there,â Graham said.
Mercy smiled.
âYouâre cooked, Owens,â he observed. âIâm surprised you havenât rented that U-Haul yet.â
Mercy sobered. âNotes,â she said.
âHey, I was just kidding.â
âSorry.â
âEverything okay with you and Abby?â
Mercy nodded. Okay? Yes, everything was okay, and no, nothing was okay. Mercy missed Abby. Theyâd managed the distance between them for two months. Abby would travel to New York one week, and Mercy would make her way to Massachusetts the next. Weekdays left Mercy cold, and often, insecure. In six weeks, Abbyâs life would change again. Brian, Abbyâs teenage son was due to return from his semester in Scotland. Abby reminded Mercy that Brianâs father lived in the Big Apple. They had a plan. Brian and Abby would spend weekends in the city.
âEarth to Mercy? Are you okay? I thought seeing Abby would make your day?â
âIt did,â Mercy said. âIâm just tired.â
âIf you say so.â
I do.
***
âDo you want to talk about it?â Abby asked.
âTalk about what?â
âWhy youâve been quiet all evening?â
âJust tired.â
âNice try,â Abby replied. âItâs more than that.â
âIsnât it me who asks the questions?â Mercy tried to joke. Abby wasnât amused. âI donât know what to say,â Mercy said.
âAre you unhappy with usâwith me?â
Gutted. Unhappy? With Abby? Never. Mercy sat stunned.
âMercy, I donât know what is happening here. I know something is bothering you.â
Oh, sure. Just tell her that you are worried about losing her. Then explain that
