CHAPTER FIVE

TWO MONTHS LATER

“Good mood or bad mood? I can’t tell,” Graham said.

“Why? Do I appear to be in a mood?”

“Yes. Missing Abby?”

Fuck. I do miss Abby. So much it fucking hurts.

“Never mind,” Graham said. He looked over Mercy’s shoulder. “Thank God!”

“Thank God?” Mercy asked.

“Yes. Misery loves company. I don’t love misery,” he said. He pointed in the distance.

Mercy turned, and her heart skipped a beat. “Abby?” She dropped the paper in her hand and sprinted across the studio. “I can’t believe you’re here. Don’t you have an afternoon class on Friday?”

“I do have the power to cancel class,” Abby replied. Somehow, I don’t think my students will miss me half as much as I miss you.”

“You missed me?”

“Maybe a smidge.”

“I can’t believe you’re here.”

“You said I could watch you tape the show any time.”

“I did say that.”

“You did.”

Mercy leaned in and kissed Abby soundly.

“I hope that means you’re happy I’m here.” Another kiss. “So good,” Abby mumbled.

“Mm,” Mercy agreed. “I didn’t think I’d see you until tomorrow.”

“Well, here I am. I thought we could start our week early.”

“I like the way you think.” Mercy took Abby’s hand and led her back toward Graham.

“Thank God, you’re here,” he said.

“Me?” Abby asked.

“Yes. Misery, here needs some company.”

Abby smirked. “Are you miserable, love?”

Mercy’s heart fluttered.

“Not anymore,” Graham joked. “I hate to break up this Hallmark moment, but we need to run through a couple of things before you take the desk, Mercy.”

“Sorry,” Mercy apologized.

“Don’t be,” Abby replied.

“You can watch from the booth,” Graham said. “Donna! Can you take Abby to the booth?”

“Sure.”

“I’ll see you soon,” Mercy promised.

“I’ll see you sooner,” Abby replied.

“She’s got you there,” Graham said.

Mercy smiled.

“You’re cooked, Owens,” he observed. “I’m surprised you haven’t rented that U-Haul yet.”

Mercy sobered. “Notes,” she said.

“Hey, I was just kidding.”

“Sorry.”

“Everything okay with you and Abby?”

Mercy nodded. Okay? Yes, everything was okay, and no, nothing was okay. Mercy missed Abby. They’d managed the distance between them for two months. Abby would travel to New York one week, and Mercy would make her way to Massachusetts the next. Weekdays left Mercy cold, and often, insecure. In six weeks, Abby’s life would change again. Brian, Abby’s teenage son was due to return from his semester in Scotland. Abby reminded Mercy that Brian’s father lived in the Big Apple. They had a plan. Brian and Abby would spend weekends in the city.

“Earth to Mercy? Are you okay? I thought seeing Abby would make your day?”

“It did,” Mercy said. “I’m just tired.”

“If you say so.”

I do.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Abby asked.

“Talk about what?”

“Why you’ve been quiet all evening?”

“Just tired.”

“Nice try,” Abby replied. “It’s more than that.”

“Isn’t it me who asks the questions?” Mercy tried to joke. Abby wasn’t amused. “I don’t know what to say,” Mercy said.

“Are you unhappy with us—with me?”

Gutted. Unhappy? With Abby? Never. Mercy sat stunned.

“Mercy, I don’t know what is happening here. I know something is bothering you.”

Oh, sure. Just tell her that you are worried about losing her. Then explain that
