Chapter 20

“Joni’s going to give him hell. And he’ll deserve every second of the torture. She’ll make him sob and apologise for everything he’s ever done. He deserves it all. She’ll give him hell. Take him to hell. Bring hell to him. Hell’s bells. All’s well that ends well. But it won’t.” She shook her head. “It won’t end well for him. No chance. Whatever it takes, Joni will make sure he gets what’s been coming to him for a long time.” She clasped her hands in front of her chest and grinned. “A long, long time.”

Bathed in the glow of twenty screens. Most of the footage moving, feeding back to her as they roamed the place. A dog’s-eye view. A drone’s-eye view. All moving save for the screen in the centre. Still knocked, it focused on the wall by the gates. No use to anyone.

She’d left him hours ago, but the taste of burned plastic remained fused to the back of her throat. Every gulp sore and laced with the chemical flavour of burned bedding. “Next time it will be burning flesh. Joni will make him scream.

“Huh?” Joni leaned closer to the screen in the top right-hand corner. A drone’s-eye view of the plaza. One of many. One of hundreds. A catapult. Two fallen guards. “Dead? Is someone killing guards? What happened to those who killed them? They will be punished. They’ll regret what they’ve done. On the run. No fun. No.” She shook her head so hard drool flew from her mouth onto several screens. “No fun.”

“I’m hungry!”

Joni spun right to face the steel door. Locked. Always locked. The little chick didn’t get to choose when he left. She knew what was best for him and when. He needed to trust that. She laughed. “He has to trust that. Mama Bird knows best.”

“I’m hungry!”

“How can you be hungry again?”

His whining voice, muffled by the steel door, shot back at her. “I’m hungry.”

It turned her spine like a corkscrew. “Joni knows you’re hungry. We’re all hungry. That’s what this world is. What, do you think Joni’s only here to feed you? To make sure you—”

“I’m hungry.”

“Arghhhhhh!” Joni clapped her hands to the sides of her head and pressed hard. “Joni hears you.” Spittle sprayed from her mouth. “You’re hungry. But what if Joni’s busy? What if Joni has things she needs to do? What if Joni needs to give herself time first? What then?”

“I’m hungry.”

Joni rocked in her seat. Towards the screens and back. Towards the screens and back. She shook her head. Again and again and again.

“I’m hungry.”

Jumping to her feet, Joni pointed at the locked door. “Joni knows what to do to shut him up. To fuck him up. You asked for Joni, and now she’s coming. You’d best be steady, ready. Are you ready, Eddie?”

Thunk! Joni unlocked the door. A chunk of deer meat in her right hand, she pulled it open with her left. The hinges cackled. They knew her plans.

“And there he is.” The little chick lay strapped to the trolley.
