What Does Limiting Stuff Teach Us and Our Kids?
Limiting stuff shows respect for the earth and its resources. By making conscious choices about what stuff we have, we reduce the mark we leave on the earth, and we show the ultimate earth-friendly gesture of consuming less. Although you may think that your children are too young to be concerned with this, the earlier we start modeling kindness to the earth, the more it becomes an effortless part of our commitment to protect the earth and its resources. Limiting stuff is a great way to start.
Limiting stuff encourages self-control. When we want something, we need to weigh many things: how much it costs, how badly we want it, and ultimately, is it necessary? This forces a stricter definition of “need” that is not simply the fulfillment of a desire but a contemplation of where we put our resources. Children learn very early about what is theirs and what is not; how much gentler it would be for our communities and our planet if children showed a knowledge of control of their desires when it may not be what is best for the greater number.
Limiting stuff helps us have more money to spend on the things we need, since we do not use our money for every fleeting desire. There should always be room for us to spend on things we want and things that bring us joy, but most of the spending we do, especially when we are parents, ought to be first and foremost on necessities. When we demonstrate frugality, it sends a message to our children that we care about what we spend money on and value wise decisions that allow for flexibility and security.
