CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Kidd made his way back to the station with DCI Singh, informing the rest of the team when they arrived about what had happened. Now, on top of trying to figure out who killed Willard Jacobson, they had another body to contend with. They’d need to shift focus and identify him and figure out what the connection was.

“I need someone to keep an eye on missing person reports,” Kidd said. “We don’t have an ID yet and getting an official ID from the ME may take a while. We may have family members enquiring about where a loved one is. I’d look into it myself but DCI Singh is setting up a press conference and… well… he wants me to be there in case they have any questions.”

“Straight into the lion’s den, eh, boss?” Erica said.

“Something like that,” Kidd replied. “Shaun, you happy to spearhead this?”

“I wouldn’t say happy, but I can do it,” he said with a smirk. “Leave it with me.”

“Thanks,” Kidd replied. “I’m still heading to the college today, just a little later than planned. I’ll have my phone on, so just keep me posted if you find anything.”

Shaun nodded and picked up the phone, immediately getting in touch with the front desk to see if any MISPERS had been called in yet.

There may have been some resistance to Kidd being there at first, but when it came down to it, this was becoming a team he could rely on. And that was exactly what Kidd needed at a time like this. He needed them to be on his side.

DCI Singh had worked quickly to gather the press together. As much as he’d wanted to keep it under wraps, it just wasn’t possible anymore, nor was it the right thing to do. It was one thing when they were investigating Willard’s death as a potential suicide, but a whole different kettle of fish when there were multiple bodies and a murderer on the loose.

There has to be something going on that we’re just not seeing, Kidd thought.

There was a meeting room near the front of the building that Stacey had set up for them. She may not have liked Kidd all that much, but she would jump through any and every hoop imaginable for DCI Singh. The room was set up, the press was called, and by the time Kidd had debriefed his team on everything that had happened and Freddie Blake had updated the evidence board, everything was ready.

“She’s a good egg, is Stacey,” DCI Singh said as he waited outside the meeting room. Kidd didn’t want to argue with him. He was about to inform the press that there was a killer on the loose, no use in adding to what was already on his plate. “You sure you don’t want to do this for me?” he asked, a smirk snaking its way across his face.

“I think you’ll be just fine on your own, boss,” Kidd said. “I’ll be here for moral support.”

“Moral support,” DCI Singh muttered.
